Chortle Chook

Lovely sunny day and I'm getting a new chook-now with PIX

Recommended Posts

What could be better? It's a lovely sunny day and I'm getting me a new chook

Wonderful Rachel at Hamble Valley Poultry has sourced me a Gold Laced Poland. I'm due to collect her on Wednesday evening and just can't wait. I've been looking for one for ages. Now not only has Rachel sourced a POL one for me but even OH has agreed this addition will be OK. Even the fact that I drove over a large rock in the road yesterday and heard a dreadful grating sound so car is now at the garage ( :anxious: ), can't dampen my day :D I keep telling my little Chamois Poland, Dotty that she is going to have a hen like her at last. I do hope they'll be friends.

Hamble Valley is as wonderful as everyone said and Rachel just so nice. I have been stunned at her energy and organisation. It is as clean as clean and all the chickens have loads of space to wander about in. The little Gold Laced Poland I have brought home (now named 'Dizzy') is in perfect health and totally adorable. She is so tame that she has even just come into our kitchen and OH is completely besotted with her  Brilliantly too, she is getting on with my others just fine. :D I'll post pictures as soon as I can.

I did not bring back any more than just the one, as the others available were real baby babies which I am not geared up for, but . . . I have reserved a little white Poland for collection in October

Here is little Dizzy all ready to depart from Hamble Valley (I got the pet carrier from PetPlanet after reading a post on here and intend to make lots of use of it  )

And here she is yesterday in her new home in the shade

The intros do seem (touch wood) to be problem free for me but that is probably because the breeds I go in for (Silkies, Polands and Frizzles) are very gentle girls. For mature girls my cockerel Dill usually makes certain that there is no arguing with a new fancy girl but this little Dizzy is too young for that and he has taken no notice of her at all.

By the way mollyripkim, Rachel has a simply adorable little bearded cuckoo Silkie . . . are you tempted.

Yes very very tempted as I don't have any beardies. Will be seeing Rachel in November as she has my girls when I go on holiday and I always have to be strict with myself, only ever intended to have three!

Your new girl is just so cute.

Are the polands broody like silkies?

Hello LottyJ The reason I like Polands so much is that they are gentle and friendly but unlike nearly all gentle, friendly gals (Silkies, Orps etc.) Polands don't go broody. This is a nuisance if you are trying to breed them, but if you are not then it is, I think, where they score bonus points over the Silkie, Pekin, Orp and Frizzle. On the other hand their egg laying abilities varies. I've heard that many are 'too posh to push' but after a slow start my Chamois Poland, Dotty is laying nice little white, rather torpedo shaped eggs. Dizzy is too young to worry about such things at the moment
