redhotchick
Hi All, my lovely niece, who is 18 is going to South Africa to volunteer for a year. I'd like to do an impromptu mini surprise present giving/we'll miss you thing. (probably only half a dozen of us) Once we get her in the lounge, I'd like to put a song on. This is where I need help! I lived overseas for a bit and the song that struck a note with me at that time was Drops of Jupiter by Train. To me it's was all about exploration and self discovery and coming home again. It was all over the radio at the time too. Is there a current song that might fit the bill, something upbeat!
soapdragon
Have you tried 'Googling' this? (Or other search engine!!) Good luck!

redhotchick
I am googling like crazy as I check for replies! So many of the songs are sorrowful though! s0apdrag0n have you seen this? http://lmgtfy.com/?q=going+away+song The top answer is "so long, farewell". I'm not really feeling that. Working my way through that kind of thing though. Cinnamon, that is exactly the kind of thing! I think it is a song that would strike a note with her, and it's now stuck in my head! A bit too focussed on the coming back and not on the going away though! I might have to put a compilation together for her! I'm a teensy bit worried she'll get cold feet at the last minute. Some of the people she was going through this with have already pulled out. Perfectly understandable. I do think she'll love it if she gives it a fair go though! craftyhunnypie
Sunchime always makes me think of Africa. When I lived a long way from home it was always the song from ' An American Tale'... Somewhere Out There. It still has me in tears when I hear it. Emma.x
redhotchick
Sunchime always makes me think of Africa. When I lived a long way from home it was always the song from ' An American Tale'... Somewhere Out There. It still has me in tears when I hear it. The theme tune from Cheers made me cry everytime I heard it when I lived overseas. I absolutely love Sunchyme, I like the Dream Academy Life in a Northern Town mix. I can't find it in t'internet though? My friend's daughter is in south Africa volounteering and she keeps talking about the banana song I've just googled this, there are a surprising number of songs about bananas! Who knew! Alis girls
Didnt Paul Simon (or Garfunkel one or t'other or both) do a song about Africa?
redhotchick
Didnt Paul Simon (or Garfunkel one or t'other or both) do a song about Africa? Not sure? Toto sang about Africa, is that the one you are thinking of? Emma, yes, Dario G recorded Sunchyme.
Alis girls
Yup remember Toto - no I was wrong it was about graceland - African liberation or something. What about "leaving on a jetplane" - that would have me blurbing
Cinnamon
I think she wanted something current & upbeat? 'Miss You' by Blink182 is another that springs to mind. Or 'Learn to Fly' by FooFighters............. or 'Holiday' by Green Day....................
redhotchick
Thanks for all replies! I settled on Green Day, Time of your life. Also played the Vaccines! I think my boyfriend was impressed by my musical knowledge It was a nice little gathering with the grandparents all there, some cousins and other aunties and uncles. I can't believe I don't know when I'll see her again! If we don't get out there to see her it will be a year!
