My sister has been buying vintage china for my nephews wedding and some smells on cigarette smoke. She has tried washing it using bicarbonate of soda but that hasn't made any difference. Has anyone got any other suggestions ?

Perhaps a sterilising tablet (for babies bottles!) would work

I assume that they are too delicate to go in a dishwasher.

Yes - I knew soft furnishings and even wood furniture would pick up cigarette smells but I hadn't realised non porous surfaces would to the extent that washing isn't sufficient before.

I'd try white vinegar (but then they may smell of that!)

Or bio washing powder (as suggested)

Or just leaving them outside for a day or two

I inherited some beautiful china which had gone almost dark brown with ages old smoke. I soaked it in washing powdre, It worked!! Took 2 or 3 goes, mind, but all gilding, and hand painted pattern survived intact:)
