Cinnamon
Hi, I have a week off in early December & we fancy a trip to a Christmas market in Europe somewhere ....... this is where you come in! I know a lot of you have been before so can anyone recommend a nice town to go to,with a great market & somewhere lovely to stay for a couple of nights? Do you do a package,or do you book it all yourselves too? Really excited - been wanting to do this for years
Couperwife
Ooooh, how exciting I would love to go to a European Christmas Market. The students at school go to Lille...to practice French and all that...I'm sure it's really so the staff can go shopping Apart from the obvious what about Prague? Or Pilsen? Spinning Top
Prague - stunningly beautiful. Huge Christmas tree, great stalls, real animal nativity scene and the castle lit up on the hill. I've been once from work and once with OH for our 10th wedding anniversary. We stayed on the Botel Matylda. (I think we booked the accomodation on Expedia and the flights separately). It's a boat, turned into small hotel / restaurant. Ask for a room on the side which overlooks the river (rather than the dock wall!) and you can watch the swans directly outside your window in the morning. Looking forward to hearing what you decide and how you get on...
Lewis
I was going to suggest Birmingham! Other than that, we went to Cologne with school
craftyhunnypie
Nuremburg or Munich - both are great. If you want a beautiful city too - try Salzburg ( Austria) - very fairytale, just what you need near to Xmas. Stock up on Schnapps & Mozart Kugeln ( chocolate praline / truffle balls). Mm mm mm. Egluntyne
Manchester and Lincoln have lovely Christmas Markets ... and they are European cities! My son has not long ago been to Prague and he said it was stunning ... and he's not usually one for noticing scenery, especially when on a stag weekend. bluekarin
My brother and his girlfriend went to Prague last year. Sadly not to the market, but they absolutely loved it. I'll see if I can get the name of the hotel they stayed at. Sent you the link on FB but its this one
Cinnamon
That looks really lovely. We have a choice of 3 now - The Red & Blue, recommended by Bluekarin, which has rave reviews but is a fair distance from the city center.Near to a tram station though. The Botel Matylda recommended by Spinning Top,which looks great & would be really different, but might be a bit cramped. Not sure about the facilities either.... And one I have found right on Wenceslas square, which is in the middle of everything so can be noisy unless you request a room at the back of the building. They are all about the ame price,so I will have a chat to the Husband & see what he thinks (I know what he will think actually - the one out of town as he LOVES foreign public transport, especially trams. I am not so keen......)
yvonne
We went to Prague several years ago and stayed some distance from the centre and we found the public transport system excellent - then did a day trip on a train which was also fantastic - put our so-called public transport system to shame in every way. Spinning Top
The Botel Matylda recommended by Spinning Top,which looks great & would be really different, but might be a bit cramped. Not sure about the facilities either.... The room was en-suite but you're right - very small. As Yvonne says, public transport is really good. Probably Bury St Edmunds for me this year although as it's a BIG birthday next November I'm hoping to go and see Santa Claus in his real home !!
