HennyPenny59 Posted October 13, 2012 Share Posted October 13, 2012 Years ago we bought our son a lovely Piano as he wanted to teach himself to play ... Over those years he progressed extremely well, and we have had the pleasure of lovely tunes ringing out from his bedroom, some of them composed by himself which were really lovely ... Anyway, last week he dropped a bombshell, and said that he felt he was losing interest and that he didn't want it in his room anymore (its a big piece of furniture) ... I asked him if he was definitely making the right decision, and he said that he was, so, very sadly we had to put it up for sale ... It sold really quickly and is being picked up tomorrow afternoon, and what has amazed me is that it has made me feel really emotional, its like a member of the family is leaving the home .. How daft is that!! I wish that I had somewhere in my little bungalow to put it, but I havn't. Go on everybody, tell me to get a life Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

However, kids do move on from one interest to another so if he says he's not interested any more, I suppose there's not much you can do. He still has that grounding and talent though and will no doubt pick it up again when he's older. You may find he picks up another instrument (my ES took up electric guitar after giving up the trumpet). We have that (fairly expensive) trumpet in the attic which I can't quite get rid of. As a family who love music and most of us actually play clarinets.....and a flute....(a piano was just too big to carry around yet we learnt to play a little , we are a family of small hands, lol) if one of us decided to give up and sell an instrument i would be sad too . Hours of a persons life has gone into it , and i bet it never moaned at bum notes or temper at not getting a bar or two right but just sat there patiently waiting for the next meeting to play, i would be in floods of tears......i don't play my pal often due to my arthritis but i couldn't sell it . Even if he never plays the piano again it's part of what he is now and part of what you are too. So don't feel sad but enjoy all your lovely memories. Even if he never plays the piano again it's part of what he is now and part of what you are too. So don't feel sad but enjoy all your lovely memories. What a good point patsylabrador. We have a very good cello that I would be very upset to get rid of DD now plays a less expensive one due to risk of damaging the good one with young children running around, when I retire I hope to play the cello, it has been one of those things that I have always wanted to do. I would be very sad if they all disappeared. It is a shame that you had an instrument that was too big to keep for when he fancied playing I am sure there will be a time in his life when he will want to take it up again. You are right, it is more about my son, and the emotion, time and effort he has put into this instrument, rather than the instrument itself ... I asked him a couple of hours ago whether he would be sad to see it go, and he said "no, not at all". Somehow that comment and the way he said it helped me to snap myself out of the silly mood I was in earlier. The Piano is going to a young music student who has managed by herself to save up all the money to pay for it, so im really pleased about the home its going to. He will maybe take up another instrument - if not now then in the future or even go back to the piano or a keyboard. Once a musician always a musician. I think my frame of mind today was much better than yesterday. The mother and daughter who picked it up were lovely, really bubbly and friendly, and I think it helped me not to feel sad, I told them I was upset to see it go, and they fully understood where I was coming from There was a little moment of panic when we all thought it wasn't going to fit in their 4x4, but with a couple of attempts we just about managed to get it in ..
