charly1979
Ok so 3 weeks ago the vet was unsure, the breeder also wasnt too sure. the vet rekoned it would be 4 weeks - 6 weeks before we would be 100% sure Jue is about 24 weeks old now, not the most femine of birds however being pushed around by the other 4 smaller girls in my group. We have had no cock a doodle doing but what do you guys think. When I finally know the sex all those who are correct will get a gold star Really want this to be Judith but have a home if it is a Jude (mind you if Jude is very quiet he can stay with me )

good_egg
The second set don't work. Do you have one of his/her comb? My breeder had girls and boys at about that age and combs were quite different shapes, although all small due to the strange flat combs they have. Tail feathers look quite boyish. good_egg
She/he doesn't have the same double comb that Dot and her family have! Can see the confusion. Head of a girl, body of a boy!! Going to vote boy, but really not sure. Sorry. Interesting to hear what the result is - fingers crossed there's an egg to give you a definite girl vote soon! Snowy
Hm, looks like a boy to me. If you have a look at the pics on this page: http://www.mypetchicken.com/chicken-breeds/Wyandotte-B6.aspx yours looks very like the GL cockerel on there. Redwing
Its a gold laced Orpington and is a male Orpingtons are fluffier than Wyandottes and their thighs much less visible, compare the shape to Pricilla who is a Wyandotte. Wyandottes have yellow legs and a rose comb and this bird has pale legs and a single comb. If it IS a Wyandotte then there is other breeds mixed in there but it looks Orpington to me See the pointed saddle feathers sweeping down in front of the tail, that tells you it is male, ditto to the neck feathers which are also gold, in a female these feathers would be finely striped/laced and not solid gold If you were sold it as a female then I would return it for a refund. I wouldnt get another bird to replace it because a single bird would not integrate well a few weeks in and secondly because well.....your breeder sounds a bit clueless I am afraid! Pearls007
Love the way Redwing just tells it the way it is!
Snowy
Do you know, I nearly said I didn't think it was a wyandotte so am pleased Redwing said the same thing! The main reason I had doubts is that my little wyandotte is a boy and is only 9 weeks old. It's been obvious from very early on that he is a boy! I agree, contact your breeder. I hope he/she is helpful
good_egg
The comb confused me! Reckon Redwing might know everything!! Shame Jude is a he though, and confusing on the breed front - reckon talk to breeder. Good luck.
charly1979
Well im gutted to find out that its not a Wynadotte I specifcally said that was what I wanted (really hope that the two Silver Laced ones I got my mum are Wynadottes) I have always suspected that its a boy due to size etc the breeded said he would have it back but im too attached and would hate to think what the fate would be (he hasnt mentioned a refund) anyway my mum said she would have it at hers as they live in the middle of nowhere mind you dad said there was no way a cockerel was going up theres but mum is working on him and as my chicken spend theor holidays at heres there shouldnt be too much of a problem intergrating him (will possibly do it in the half term when they have their next holiday to thier grandmas and cousins) Mind you if it remains a mute as it is now and any cock a doodle doing is in the daytime he can stay with me. To be honest not being disrespectful he does seem rather camp so lets hope he stays that way .... (see Ive accepted that its a Jude)
good_egg
Poor you, how annoying! In your signature Priscilla looks like she has a rose comb and Redwing referenced the shape of her so sounds good. Hope Jude stays quiet!
charly1979
Yep Prilly came from a close friends son who breeds them but when I wanted more he had stopped so I went elsewhere I should have taken him with me this wouldnt have happened (hes not been home much or I would have had him over to tell me the bad news) He rekons that Prilly is one of his better girls and could possibly be show standard she is pretty but doesnt like cuddles (naughty girl) Oh well Thanks everyone you all get gold stars
Redwing
Silver laced Orpingtons are quite rare so I would think your mum's are Wyandottes If Jude is indeed an Orpington they are agonisingly slow to mature so he could be weeks off crowing yet but I would put money on him having a go soon, they make party blower noises to start with Pricilla does look nice, maybe try your hand at a local show? the season is about to start and there is bound to be one near you. Showing is highly addictive mind! Good_egg - I dont know everything but I DO know Wyandottes
charly1979
Thanks Redwing, I would love to show but I dont think Prilly will let me shes a "Ooops, word censored!" to catch etc . She is beautiful and I think she knows it. Id love a pair of shoes in her pattern
charly1979
Ok you can all have a gold star ! As we suspected this chooky is JUDE and a very handsome boy he is too. I had a very muffled cock a dooldle doo on Friday but not a lot since but luckilly he has got himself a new home at my mums (so I still get to be his Mummy too !) He hasnt made the move yet but I suppose we need to do it soon before I get any complaints and he realises what he can do with his voice. He has spent the odd week at my mums so he knows her chickens and two of them are his sisters so all should be well. His is very timid still so I expect they will all put him in his place like mine have, and when he does move he wil become Julian ... Thanks for everyones help
