Mrs Webmuppet
Big eggcitement chez Webmuppet ...the ex batts are coming tomorrow. Part of today will be spent getting the Cube ready ( once Little Miss Webmuppet gets out of her bed ). I can see that Mr W and I will be spending part of next week providing 'lift 'services to the chooks as they get used to the split level accommodation! zakjon-98
How exciting How many are you getting?
Mrs Webmuppet
We were going to get 4 but the BHWT lady talked us into getting 5 ........they were short of rehomers, chicken maths prevailed and Mr W is a sucker for a sob story ! I will just have to bribe the neighbours with eggs (or cake)as we already have one hybrid and two bantams in the Eglu. When Mr W returns from getting wood to build a ramp for the Cube I will get him to charge the camera up, although we aren't picking the chooks up until mid afternoon tomorrow so it will be getting dark by the time we get home. Mr Webmuppet
Just to prove the modern adage, "If you want a bloke to do something .........there's no need to remind him every six months" I have completed a modified ramp for the new chooks. I was rather hoping to find some appropriate timber lurking in the garage but in the end I had to nip into Homebase and buy some real tree-wood. For anyone else contemplating a modified ramp, you'll need 1m of timber - the stuff that I used was 150mm wide and was described as 'rough sawn' (i.e. the cheapest). A 1.8m length of 40 mm wide timber provided the five steps. Both lengths of timber were purchased as 1.8 metre lengths and cost just over a fiver (the left overs are a useful size too). I already had a couple of small metal angle brackets which I used as hooks to attach the ramp to the existing ladder - but in the end I attached another small piece of s"Ooops, word censored!" timber to them so that there were no sharp edges that might damage any chooks. Anyway, it's a reasonable result for not much outlay Cheers, Nigel

Mr Webmuppet
Update: They've been collected and installed in our Cube .........at the moment they've been shut into their roosting box because they are at risk of getting cold after their dramatic change of environment. It a bit gloomy for photos this late in the afternoon but the chooks are a lovely chestnut and white colour - they look a bit 'threadbare' at the moment but they should flourish into some rather lovely looking birds, More updates soon, Nigel

Mrs Webmuppet
4 of the chooks successfully negotiated Mr W's ladder this morning, the remaining one wasn't too sure, looked completely baffled and had to be helped down the ladder. The fact I had put one of the feeders at the bottom of the ladder might have been an incentive! They appear to be quite happy and are stuffing their faces and peering out into the garden. I'm not sure that the existing chooks have even noticed that there are residents in the Cube the other side of the garden ( it's only a small garden)
