Only had my eglu a couple of months and have noticed that a rodent has bitten around the hole at the base of the nesting tray. I do not store food near the eglu and keep my eglu clean. Am so disappointed as I thought my eglu would be indistructable. Any help would be most appreciated.

Sorry to hear that, I'd site it on slabs in case it comes back.

 

It's most likely to be a rat, so I'd advise getting a pest control person in to lay bait boxes.

In addition to The Dogmother's advice I'd also make sure that all food is brought in at night, and that you keep the gap under the Eglu clear of all debris.

We also had this with our first classic several years ago my OH put a metal piece over the hole and bolted it on we also did this when we got our second just in case, water can still drain but it would be harder to chew through.

I think it is a bit of a design fault, very dissappointed. Thanks for the advice will follow all of the above recommendations. Its a shame was going to trade in my eglu classic for a cube but the damage will reduce my resale value.

Could you buy a replacement base, the cost may be worth it if you can sell it for more as it would be in good condition.

Rats can chew through almost anything, brick, concrete, even metal! The best solution is to prevent rats (or other rodents) in the first place.

I am putting traps out at night, but no look so far.

Depends on what sort of trap you are using and what you bait it with. It's best to leave them in place rather than bringing them in as rats are neophobes and don't like anything new, so will be spooked and wary of it when you put it out each evening. It's best to use the grain/granular bait too as it is possible for them to work the block off the hook and then drop it en route for another animal to find and ingest.
