AJuff
I'd love to extend my brood but after reading about all the bullying I decided that it would not be a good idea to introduce just one hen, a pair would be better. However I only have a small eglu and I don't think five hens could fit in. So should I get one hen, or should I replace the eglu for a cube? Any thoughts? Gallina
I would advise anyone who can afford it: "Get a Cube". And I would say to anyone who has room: "Hold on to your Eglu as well". I think it is true to say that everyone who has a Cube loves it, and wouldn't go back to the Eglu. But by keeping the Eglu too, introductions are so much easier. The new girls can have a few weeks to grow up a bit and acclimatize on their own, while getting to meet the old girls when free-ranging. A real plus point of having a separate Eglu is that you can buy very young chickens (ones that still cheep), and let them get bigger and stronger before you introduce them. And it would be useful for sick or injured hens. Or you could keep bantams in it. Or just an overflow of hens could live permanently in it: they could move up into the Cube when any older hens pass away, giving you another new hen opportunity.
