snugglesafe

Recommended Posts

Thanks CM, yes, we do that with the kettle too easy peasy. However going away this weekend, leaving the nieghbour in charge, so looking at how to make it as easy as pos. Ideas for the future too.

Ping pong ball in the water? During very cold weather I put an apple in the horses' water buckets, it floats, moving and so the water doesn't freeze...

... However, sometimes the horses play boobin apples well.

Thanks for the post! I have one already, I think I paid about £20 so it's a good price!! Use it in the cube with the pekins when the temp is below frezzing. Also heard of them being used under plastic drinkers during the day to keep them from freezing, so will be good to have 2!! :D:dance:

I have one of those big heavy enamel dog bowls for my chickens drinking water, and I put a Snugglesafe under it just before I go to bed.

wouldnt you want to put it under it in the morning to keep it from freezing up during the day..???

I pop one under the roosting bars wher only too young birds are..

It was lovely watching them shuffle over it when they felt the warmth :)

i bought one in a panic last week and then also bought a water heater base which is in constant use now, i was thinking of putting the snugglesafe under the roosting bars when it gets very cold but doesnt it get poo all over it?? does anyone put it inside a plastic bag or something to make it easier to clean? i'd have to heat it up when OH isnt around, hes less than impressed about a chicken poo item going in the microwave!

Hayleybug, have you got the one with the fleece paw print cover? Just take the cover off if you're putting it under the roosting bars. :D Then if it gets pooped on you can rinse it! :D I prop mine up between roosting bars inside the coop, so leave the cover on! :D The cover is washable though.

Hubby is up much earlier than me, and lets the girls out ... He doesn't have time to do anything else than that, so I refresh the water just as they go to bed and leave the bowl on the Snugglesafe to save him the chore of de-icing the water in the morning. In the winter they are in a polytunnel and the water thankfully doesn't freeze in there during the day, only at night :)

thats a good idea, but its the OH's issue with putting it in the microwave after that (even if i have washed it first!) so i think i might have to put it in a plastic bag like sandyhas3chooks, that way i can reassure him theres no residue going around in advance of his porridge in the morning :D

not to hijack the thread, but just another quick question about these- if you work in the day and you get home and they have gone to bed, are these easy enough to slide in under the roosting bars when the chooks are inside? otherwise they'll only get the luxury at the weekend!

I tried mine out this evening in the girls' coops :D They were very easy to prepare - just popped in the microwave - then I put one sheet of newspaper around it (with the fleece still on) with Auboise sprinkled on top. I like the consistent warmth, as I was worried it was going to be very hot straight out of the microwave, but this isn't a problem so far.

My sussex in the wooden coop sat right on top of it, whilst the amber tried to snuggle against it as the sussex took up most of the room on the snugglesafe! And the girls in the Eglu snuggled against it together and they looked very sweet. I hope it makes the freezing nights more comfortable :)
