Chortle Chook
On Christmas Eve one of my greyhounds, Jester, had a dreadful accident. He slipped on my kitchen floor, did the splits with his back legs, pulled the ball part of his hip joint out of its socket, ripped the ligament that is supposed to attach it and shattered some of the bone on the socket part of the joint. We had bad flooding round here and I had to ring around to find a vet who was prepared to take him as so many were not taking animals in case they were flooded out (and because it was Xmas). Finally I found one who was prepare to keep him on a drip of pain killers till after Xmas when they operated. He now has a hip full of nylon but bless his cotton socks today he has just finished his last pain killer. His recovery has been really fast and though he seems to have a wooden leg he can come for little walks and is a very happy, tail waggy chappy Anyway as I just can't risk him falling again - ever - and as Jester can't now come upstairs to my study or bedroom, we have had lots of changes at home. A baby gate now blocks off part of my long skinny kitchen and the other part has been made into a dog room for him and my other greyhound. It has nice soft beds and a nice rug on the floor and a little night light. Finally today, to make more turning room for Jester in the dining room, a friend of mine took away the large oak dining room table and the nice man from Acorn Nursery (a chicken breeder) in Stadhampton has let me have one of his tea room tables in its place as that is smaller and lighter. Jester deserves it Anyone else done home re-designes for a pet?
Lavenders_Blue
Wow, what a lucky boy Jester is to have such a caring mum! I'm glad he's all better now too, it's such a worry when they are out of sorts isn't it?
lillybettybabs
Yep, I have a blind house rabbit so all the furniture is to the side of the room and never moves, Rugs are place nearto doors so she can work out where she is in the house. She has mapped out the layout of the house so does very well!
The Dogmother
Not many changes here except for a stairgate on the stairs and kitchen. When my last lurcher was old and poorly she had a special bed, but as none of the dogs is allowed upstairs, there weren't any other modifications. Sorry to hear about Jester, hope he recovers speedily. This link will give you the details of a very well renowned greyhound and lurcher specialist vet in case you ever need it. Bramble
Sorry to hear about poor Jester, there's never a good time for something like that to happen, but on Christmas Eve it couldn't be worse. I have a retired racer, Willow, who has been through some s"Ooops, word censored!"es in her time with me - just keep an eye out for drain covers when you are out walking with your greys (lurchers anything with thinish legs), Willow's foot went straight down one once, the result was a badly shredded leg, LOTS of blood and a screaming greyhound - thank goodness for a kind witness who stopped to help and supplied bandages etc.
Chortle Chook
lillybettybabs I'm truely impressed by what you have done for your little house rabbit. Goes to show that all pets are equal I once had a house rabbit who used to sleep at the bottom of my bed. They can be just like cats. Bramble - don't you just hate those screams Makes me wonder how anyone could ever be cruel to a long dog.
The Dogmother
You want to hear a saluki scream you could cut Ruby's leg off and she wouldn't utter a murmur, but Cyrus screams like a pig if he steps on an ant

UKMARCH
Poor Jester that sounds very painful but glad he's on the mend and feeling chirpier, these things always happen at Christmas don't they our youngest also tore herself quite badly two Christmases ago and it was bad snow so had problems getting to the vets too. My other has problems with our kitchen floor but has no option but to go through to the garden we used to have to all stand well clear and stand like a statue when he was passing as otherwise he wouldn't come anywhere near, recently he is getting absent minded and has forgotten his worries about it and even pushes past in a small gap so I am wary of his slipping. They have such power in their hind legs that once they go they definitely go with a bang!
Bramble
I know, the "greyhound scream" was something I was quite unprepared for when I adopted Willow - makes it very difficult to know if there's actually anything really wrong or if they're just being wimps sometimes
Chortle Chook
I once asked a vet about the greyhound scream and he confirmed that they are not being wimps - they do actually feel pain more acutely

Chortle Chook
My Jester is now fully recovered. Thought people might like to see how happy he looks Talk about 'worth every penny'! (Sorry, I just haven't worked out how to reduce photos with the new Photobucket )

pips_pekins
Oh what a handsome lad. Glad to hear he has made such a good recovery. I have a stair gate as stinky is not allowed upstairs. When we bought a new leather suite we were worried about her marking it. I knew it would be difficult to stop her going on so we moved the dining table out into the conservatory and have a second lounge in the dining room. That way she gets to still sit on the old sofa with us and we rarely get to sit on the new suite so it has no marks at all!!!
Chortle Chook
PipsPekins,I love your dog's name The trouble with getting a new sofa when you have dogs is that suddenly you end up with a sort of Victorian 'front room' that is only used by guests , or you use your front room but sit on the floor. In our house OH and terrier His Nibbs sit on the sofa (as His Nibbs is small enough to fit on a wee blanket on the sofa) and I sit on the floor with the big dogs getting all nice and hairy
The Dogmother
I'm afraid that my dogs (think they are) hard done by... I don't allow them on furniture, but they do have comfy beds by the log burner
