ClaudetteDay
after the second death of our hen, sookie, we were left with our little lulu. perplexed with what we should do with her, we wondered whether find a new home with other chickens would be kinder? but I was advised from a fellow member that would be a cruel decision since she has only ever known my family out of the battery. since adding to our (non-existent) flock was out of the question, we decided to officially give her title of 'house hen', and thankfully for our wooden flooring and well behaved german shepherd dog, the experience has been utterly wonderful with no troubles at all (apart from my dad moaning, but he's always moody so no surprise there). sadly today my mum noticed the hen wasn't herself, very down in the weather. first conclusion was that she was egg bound judging by the way she was acting (struggling to lay and her recent couple disasters of soft eggs), however, a trip to the vet this evening has completely eradicated that theory. due to a temperature of 107, lulu is being put on a round of antibiotics but it looks like the little mite is just getting old and on her way out. it's no surprise we have prolonged her life from the luxury bestowed upon her (hence the nickname 'princess lulubet') . we couldn't be more heartbroken ... we rescued her in 2010 and since the day we got she's always been the prominent character (not always for the best of reasons) amongst the other two. being on her own has really nurtured her into a affectionate hen; every morning she runs up the stairs into my bed for a morning cuddle under the duvet, often resting her head on mine and falling fast sleep. lulu is having no troubles eating and drinking so hopefully this is a small hurdle we will ultimately overcome. anyway, wish us luck!!! picture of lulu - http://img833.imageshack.us/img833/2246/17767710151153656966381.jpg

chickenflaps
we were recently left with one hen, and she stopped laying and was obviously miserable. We then bought a "new" point of lay chicken to keep her company and they very quickly became best buddies and now the older one has started laying again! so...maybe get one other and see how you go?
