Louise
I am not laughing (much) ginette I am lucky with an open fire in my part of the world you have to as the power goes off quite regularly without it life would be very cold so I feel your pain At least you have water in the house albeit cold water
The Dogmother
I do that too Louise, for a biggish town, Banbury has quite a few power cuts, so I light the stove and put the kettle on the top. You can cook on it too, but I draw the line at frying eggs in the living room!
Guest
I used to have a lovely open fire, but now we live in a modern house with no fireplaces or even a chimney Boring rooms with no character, but we fill them up so much any 'character' they had would be lost anyway I missed my boiled egg this morning and I am pondering which vegetables will microwave best for my lunch. Perhaps I'll bake them in a casserole with the salmon? I've just remembered that's quite nice with a garlic and lemon dressing. Gas Board is due sometime before 6pm, so we should be warmer this evening! If not, hot water bottles . . . Have a good laugh on me Louise! Lesley
Ginette, I can sympathise with you. We had worktops, sink, ovens and gas hob delivered on Monday. Our replacement hob would also cause the same problem as the wall units now don't comply with current legislation but my son is fitting it and he has to do what I tell him! However, Screwfix didn't deliver the whole order of tools yesterday and we are here, worktops ready and it's not raining so they can be cut outside (I was dreading having to do them inside) but we have no mitre cutter for the worktop Screwfix are telling lies about it and blame the couriers - the Couriers say it was only delivered to them last night! It will be delivered by 5.30 today But it's not raining NOW!!!
Guest
It's so comforting to know I'm not the only one! Is your son qualified? My brother will cut the top for me but he won't connect the gas (although he does all his own, illegitimately). I hope the weather is dry tomorrow for you! Lesley
Son has already connected the electrics to the ovens so connecting the gas illegally is no problem I know the laws are meant to prevent shoddy/dangerous workmanship but they could have some discretion for kitchen refurbs My father was an electrician before he retired and I've been brought up doing these jobs. I was also working as a plumber with my ex. for some time - I'm not paying people to do jobs I can do
Guest
My brother has decided he will fit the hob in place but not connect it to the gas. He's not quite sure what sort of connection it requires and if he sounds hesitant in the shop, they'll know he's not qualified and then won't sell him the bits. The Gas Board, who mended the boiler today, suggested I try the Gas Board (another £100) and if they refuse to do the work (because the cupboards overhang by 2 cms), then I shoud take the cupboards off the wall and put them back on once the work is done! Everyone agrees there isn't a real hazard and it is a very grey area. Meanwhile hob is sitting on working top covered in plastic and polystyrene. And my kitchen is VERY small The house was built for 2+2 (1 double and 2 single beds) and I think it would have been small for 4 people. We have 5 bedrooms now and there are 6 of us in the house. The kitchen is about 8 square feet, but has three doorways. In effect it is 5 square feet and I don't have room for this unfitted hob! Lesley
.....but you've made me feel happier about my kitchen Ginette I thought mine was small.........
Guest
I'm glad it pleases someone I hope your kitchen gets sorted out soon! I've paid £100 to have the oven connected and it looks like I'll have to pay the same again to get the hob connected. I won't be able to afford any food to cook on my lovely new cooker for quite some time
Louise
Scrambled eggs Ginette
Guest
I think so Louise - eggs, eggs and more eggs! A third of an egg each a day! Do you think that will keep us all going? I should be really slim for Christmas then!
Louise
Ah Bless We won't let you starve Ginette we will have to arrange a virtual food parcel preferably microwavable till you get it all sorted

Lesley
I'll send you my speciality Poo Cake - it doesn't need cooking! It's not all going smoothly here either - the two minutes silence on TV was reduced to 30 seconds and then I had to dash to hold up a heavy worktop and listen to lots of swearing I don't think I'll be taking him to Church on Sunday The gas should be in the right place and just reconnect but the plumbing for the sink is going to need 'some adjustments' - probably by me, with the aid of a big hammer in a minute
Cate in NZ
ooops Lesley, sounds like fun Good luck with it. Is it raining though?
Guest
Gee thanks Lesley, you are so kind Why does plumbing always need moving? Whatever you do, the fittings are always slightly different and adjustments need to be made. Nothing is straightforward

Nicola H
I think the worker is Lesley's son, bashing him might be a bit counter productive..................

Guest
Well, my hob is fitted now, but not connected to the gas mains! We might have to shorten the wall cupboards in order to get anyone to connect it. That means losing even more cupboard space Perhaps my husband will now think more seriously about extending the kitchen?
The Dogmother
Might end up being the cheaper option
Guest
Well we can't afford to move to somewhere with a bigger kitchen, but still 5 bedrooms. We'd be talking mini-mansion and the prices down here are more like a joke!
Lesley
Well I didn't hit my son with a hammer, you'll be pleased to know My son is the original "Grumpy Old Man" and has been since he was 15 - it wasn't worth making him worse Gas is connected - sink just needs a new bit of waste pipe. Of course, all our warranties are invalid Ginette - can't you remove the wall cupboardes just until the gas is connected? Then put tham back up again? Or, hsall I send my son down to connect it?
Guest
Thank you Lesley. My hob looks lovely and my brother has worked out what he needs to connect it up. He is hopefully going to do that tomorrow. We might shorten the wall cupboards too as I think they may get quite hot if I ever cook again! Are you farming out your washing up Lesley (or having to eat out all the time? )
Lesley
Glad it is nearly sorted Ginette. We didn't touch the dishwasher so no washing up problems and we have a sink in the adjoining utility room I haven't felt well all week so haven't read the manuals yet. We've far too many appliances which we haven't had the time to learn how to use them properly and we don't get the most out of them - I'm determined to read these
