jools+6 Posted February 18, 2013 Share Posted February 18, 2013 got six new hens ( bluebell rangers ) to add to my remaining 3 black rocks . couldn't get a real black rock for love nor money . anyway they're in lay , and laid 5 eggs yesterday , Sunday and one was somewhat deformed slightly flat at one side and a bit wrinkly (only picked them up on Saturday afternoon ) however today I've got two soft shelled eggs , one empty , the other useless . the poo was also milky yesterday but seems better today . their combs though were pink not red and today one of them has a very pale almost creamy comb . the fact they wont go in at night and have to be lifted and put into the coop on top of the move here and the fact that the rocks hate them just now won't be helping . it's stressing me too !! never had a problem with the rocks at all . so I've put cider vinegar in the water today ( I seem to be filling the drinker constantly too , twice a day , it holds about 3 or 4 litres ) I've even googled chicken poo , not nice but worth while . so im about to worm . i've used vermex up till now but I was thinking flubenvet just to be sure . are the marraiges pellets with flubenvet as good ? they seem to be an easier option than dosing grapes , the new hens don't trust me yet so it would be easier . will order tonight so any feed back is most welcome . I have a client who was a farmer but I wont see her until Friday , and the farm I got the girls from is recommended they weren't just fly by nights , we actually buy meat etc from them . abwsco Posted February 18, 2013 Share Posted February 18, 2013 I use the flub/pellet combo as it just so much easier. Infact have just started giving mine their first dose of the year. Ordered from farmandpetplace.co.uk as I have previously and it was here the next day. If you do use them they will ask you some questions over the phone first. jeshen Posted February 18, 2013 Share Posted February 18, 2013 Have tried both. Last October I used the pellets with flubenvet - cd only get them in a 5kg bag. As I've only got 5 bantams, didn't need anything like that amount and kept them hoping to use them again. However they'd gone completely mouldy when I opened the bag at the start of Feb and had to throw them out. Also I noticed on the packet that the effectiveness of the medication wd have been out of date anyway by Feb. So I've used the powder this time. It's very simple with clear instructions and you can make up the exact amount you need. Personally I find the powder better, but if you've got a lot of big chooks, maybe you would use all the 5kg in a week. Hope the worming sorts them out for you... Ordred the fluvenbet pellets ... so hopefully it's all going to be sunny and shiney and unicorns will trot across the garden and the fairies will come along and do ALL my housework , before the magic elves bring me peace powder for whole flock ... im off for a wee tonic .... charly1979 Posted February 18, 2013 Share Posted February 18, 2013 Ive done both When you buy the pellets ready mixed you shoud be advised that they have to be used within a quick period of time and that the remainder can be mixed in with you normal ones (assuming its not a huge amount) anyway thats what I did. I am currently on day 3 of worming with the powder version, I pop the correct amount in with thier pellets and then mix with cod liver oil (I got a huge tub/pot from a vets intended for horses ) I generally find day 1 they girls look at it with utter disgust but eat it happily I recall it took them longer to 'get used' to the mixed pellets however if you make sure that is the only food they soon decide to eat up I am prefering the powder at the moment Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

There is little difference between treating them for 7 days by mixing with pellet and using the premedicated pellets other than ease of use and expense. I find it very straightforward mixing my own. It took me 5mins to mix a batch up on Saturday. I bunged it all in the treadle feeder and have left them too it The pellet do work out more expensive and if you don't use the whole lot in one treatment, check your expiry date on the bag to make sure you can use it next time around. Lavenders_Blue Posted February 20, 2013 Share Posted February 20, 2013 I buy the flubenvet powder as I feed mash and don't want my little darlings turning their nose up at the pellets. It's very easy to mix up - 1 scoop of powder mixed into 2kg of their normal feed, once that's gone mix up another batch and keep going until they've been eating it for a week. Simples!
