Chicken swallowed rubber?

Recommended Posts

Yesterday my 9 year old son suddenly leapt up and said Charlie chicken had something on her mouth, when he went outside he said it looked like a piece of balloon or rubber and she swallowed it.

This morning she hasn't come out of the coop and her crop is still full. What should I do?

That's a difficult one  was it definitely a balloon or rubber (e.g. Brightly coloured)? Have you been able to check her mouth (you could maybe wrap her in a towel to keep her still while you check?) Maybe it's still in her crop and you could empty it before it makes its way any further down - I know you can do this but have no idea how - hopefully someone more experienced will be able to advise. Hope she is ok

She's had some water to drink, did a really yucky green watery poo and had a couple of raisins which I coated in olive oil as I read that the oil might help clear the crop. She's really hunched up and very bloated and doesn't want to be picked up. Have to go to work now but will check her at lunch time. Don't know that it was definitely rubber, it's just how my son described it. :(

Whatever it was that she swallowed, if she is hunched up, not eating or drinking, and generally looking unwell then I think she needs veterinary advice - it doesn't sound as if it's something you will be able to treat on your own, and it wouldn't seem to be passing through her system from what you have said.

Thank you to everyone's messages and concern!

Well Charlie's been to the vet and had a crop examination and X-ray and the vet, who is an excellent avian expert, is a bit confused as to what is going on. Her crop is working fine and there's no blockage but there's something that's making her not have enough air in her lungs and some strange tar like bits that have been pulled out. He seems to think that the swallowing of rubber/plastic is not related and doesn't seem to be causing a problem.

We've brought her home with antibiotics and she's very quiet and wobbly after the anaesthetic but has eaten at the vets. We've got to get more antibiotics down her tomorrow and hope for the best! :(

Good news, Charlie seems to be getting better. She's not totally herself but I guess some of that must be the general anaesthetic. unfortunately the antibiotics are liquid so it's a nightmare getting that down her, definately a 2 person job but she getting used to it. hopefully she's on the mend. :D Just the horrendous vets bill to pay off now :?

I had to give liquid anti-inflamatory to the hen too - i soaked that into a small (grape sized) piece of wholemeal bread and covered that with, yes, more cream cheese! Guess all this only works if your hen is eating (and likes cream cheese!) but i just put that in front of her and it was gone in seconds

Very glad she's on the mend :)
