charly1979
Ok goes without saying doesn't it ! and thankfully my mum did just that : Our Cockerel Julian seems off colour and lethargic at the moment (in fact quite concerned mum thinks we could lose him may be another post from me asking for advice ) Anyway as with any of our chooks we are going through the check list and straight away we noticed lice so she made a special journey to one of our farm feed suppliers asked if they had any spray rather than the powder as that would be easier. The lady gave her a can (cant recall what it is) and said you spray this under the feathers and you can do the house with it too. Mum goes home with my daughters help baths Julian then gets the spray and starts reading the directions and then sees in bold writing 'NOT FOR USE ON ANIMALS MAY CAUSE HARM OR DEATH' (that may not have been the precise wording im at home the can is at mums) Luckily she had some other powder that she could use but she was really cross because she had specifically asked for advice and the lady seemed very knowledgeable, chances are it may have been ok but mum wasn't going to risk it. She has been back to the shop and complained but they didn't seem that bothered which has upset her mainly as she feels it could get sold to someone else and that they may not read the labelling . I know most of us on here would be like my mum and read the label but thought id post just in case x
Eggasperated
I'm a great fan of reading labels, but that does not excuse any shop of selling a product which is clearly not fit for purpose (or worse) .
Purplemaniacs
Well done your Mum. If you are given advice you expect it to be accurate, if I ask a question I far prefer the assistant to be honest and say I don't know rather than tell me some load of rubbish. Hope Julian improves soon. Chrissie
Lewis
Could you find out the name of the product? Sometimes it is the case that a product is licensed only for use in poultry housing and not on birds, as if the bottle says you can use it on animals, it has to be licensed as a medicine. I know I have bought things in the past that say only for use in housing and not on animals, but have used common sense and used them on my birds with effective results. Obviously be careful and make sure you read the label/check the active ingredients as this isn't always the case, but it may have been a misunderstanding. I'd expect the assistant to have explained this or at least apologised though!!
charly1979
I will find out although it clearly states about causing harm to animals, as for the assistant I don't think she was there when mum complained/mentioned it but they shop didn't seem at all concerned. And yes your right sometimes we do use things that aren't intended for the use but as a shop they ought not be giving that advice I would have thought it would leave them wide open to problems, but having said that like mum said the majority of people do tend to check so luckily all is well
Redwing
crikey, if I kept strictly to products licenced for the purpose I dread to think what would be running round my coops and chickens I guess a professional selling this stuff needs to be a bit careful though
Lewis
I'll usually say to people if it were my chicken I would do/use... Rather than telling them they should use...

I agree, I come across this time and again - as Lewis has said, backyard chicken keeping is relatively new, the licensing of some vet medicines hasn't really kept up, and there are plenty of products which aren't licensed for use on poultry in the UK, but which vets would recommend or prescribe using. I have to say that I am always very careful to point this out if people ask.
