Sandychick
I seem to remember some time ago hearing on the radio that Abbotsbury Swannery play radio 4 to keep foxes away. The theory is that they don't like the sound of human voices. Just wondered if anyone had tried it, and if it works. I have a motion sensor camera set up next to the hens, and I was shocked to find that the fox is there about every 2 hours every night. Here is one of the pictures. I think this proves that the run must be fox proof, but it must be stressful for the hens having a big animal that wants to eat them prowling about. They are listening to radio 4 tonight, so it will be interesting to see if the fox is back tonight or not. I hope it works, but if not at least my chickens will be well educated
gavclojak
Wow what an interesting idea, I will be very interested to see how it pans out. It's shocking to see that nasty red coat visiting so often, maybe he is casing the joint!!
CheekyPekins
I read this too - here, I think: http://foxrepellentexpert.com/using-a-radio-as-a-fox-deterrent/ Definitely worth a try, let us know how you get on
Saronne
Sounds a really good idea, but wouldn't the fox get used to the noise - especially with no accompanying humans to frighten them off?
Mrs_B
Good luck with testing the radio! Shocked to see your poor hens being stalked every 2 hours every night - if I knew the same thing was happening outside my chooks' run, I'd want to try and put a stop to it, even if I knew they were 100% safe. x
Sandychick
No fox last night, but we did have the Fusion Festival blasting away in the park near my house until 11pm last night so that could have been a bit disturbing for the fox too Will take a few weeks to conclude anything I think. I'll let you know..........
Sandychick
I've been trying this for 5 weeks now and with brilliant results As soon as the radio was left on at night, the fox stopped visiting completely for 2 weeks. In the last 3 weeks, the camera has caught only 2 fox visits. I am amazed and very happy The hens are so much quieter and calmer in mornings now too. Obviously not something to rely on, but if your girls are being constantly harassed like mine were, definitely give it a try.
