Miss Millies Chicken
Now that the nights are drawing in I like to crochet and knit in the evenings whilst watching the TV. Last winter I found that I struggled with the light levels in my lounge when using dark coloured wools. Can anyone recommend a reasonable priced craft light. I'm after a floor standing one with a flexible head that I can bend over the chair
Olly
This one isn't floor standing, but you can clip it on a shelf or similar, and I've found it really good - Mighty Light. It can run on mains or battery so it's good for taking away too.
Miss Millies Chicken
Thanks Olly for the suggestion Unfortunately there is no place to clip the lamp by the chair that I use. So I really need a floor standing one. Does anyone use a day light lamp for knitting/crafting?
jasperaliceuk
I do and have found the light pretty good. Obviously you do need the more expensive daylight bulbs but they seem to last a good while. Sue
Miss Millies Chicken
Hi Sue. Thanks for your reply. I'll think I will go for a day light bulb light especially as you say the bulbs seem to last a while.
Plum
I've got one by my sewing machine but find it too hot so only use it when I want to see a true colour. I've got a daylight bulb in what I think is a normal lamp
Chickendoodle
I have just bought this http://www.candh.co.uk/pp/Craft/Lamps_and_Magnifiers/Naturalight_Flexi_LED_Floor_Lamp.html Our local shop, C&H had a 20% off offer over the weekend so I treated myself. It is wonderful. Stands 3 ft tall so the light is about 10 inches above your work when sitting in an armchair. There is a row of lights and the arm is flexible. The effect is like a patch of warm sunlight over the work (warm as in tone, not heat as it gives off no heat at all). I am currently knitting a pair of grey socks which are very hard to see in artificial light and it is just like working in daylight. I can heartily recommend it - sorry I didn't see the thread before as the offer has finished now
Charlottechicken
Thanks for that, Chickendoodle! Seems those lights are readily available on Amazon too. Let us know how you get on with it
Miss Millies Chicken
Hi I went ahead and got this http://www.amazon.co.uk/CIL-Vision-Standing-Reading-Daylight/dp/B00DS4N36S/ref=sr_1_11?ie=UTF8&qid=1381259966&sr=8-11&keywords=daylight+lamp but in matt black. Had no problem putting it together despite what the reviews on Amazon said. Have done some kniting using the lamp (4ply socks). The wool colours are good and I can now see the stitches when I dropped them accidently I can adjust the lamp over my chair to various heights . The only niggles are that the flex to the plug could have been a bit longer and the light emitted appears a cold bluish one. But so far I am pleased with it. Chickendoodle
Thanks for that, Chickendoodle! Seems those lights are readily available on Amazon too. Let us know how you get on with it It's really good, quite u"Ooops, word censored!"trusive when not in use as it is very thin. It illuminates the work area brilliantly. The arm is flexible so you can angle it as well and you get a pool of natural looking daylight over your work. It's like a patch of sun on your lap The lights are in a row and I guess that the row is just over 12 inches - bulbs never need replacing apparently. It emits no heat at all Somehow it doesn't really feel like a light as it seems so natural. I have also been using it during the day as my living room it not particularly bright and my eyes certainly feel less strained. I spent hours on the internet researching the various lights and having settled on that one was thrilled that our local store had a 20% off everything weekend. I think they were a bit bemused at the checkout as I bought 3 - one for me and the other two for my sister as she wants them as bedside reading lights. There is also a table top version which is slightly cheaper
Luvachicken
Sorry to be a bit dim Chickendoodle, but which light did you buy in the end ?
Charlottechicken
Well, thanks to this thread, I have just bought myself a craft light! ***This one*** to be precise! Just £19.95 and free delivery at the moment too Bought it on Wednesday night and it arrived this morning. It is quite weighty and the bulb is large, the light is brilliant, just like daylight and you don't have to wait for the bulb to reach optimum light either. I was going to get the floor standing one as well but they have just put a p+p charge back on that one so I will bide my time
Miss Millies Chicken
I bought the floor standing version last October. I have it angled over my armchair and its been brilliant. I like to crochet and knit in the evenings whilst watching TV. I didn't appreciate how much I struggled until I got the lamp. Colours are good and dropped 4 ply stitches are easy to spot. I dont get warm sitting underneath it
Valkyrie
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/offer-listing/B002UPMM0O/ref=sr_1_3_olp?ie=UTF8&qid=1396174540&sr=8-3&keywords=daylight+craft+lamp&condition=new I have an older version of this - the swivel is handy because I can angle it to shine across from the window ledge or side table. Gosh it has gone up in price a fair bit!!!
