farrowy
thanks!! Supposed to be working from home so I can be there to take the delivery, not sure how I'll be able to concentrate on worky stuff - especially once they have arrived - will have to go and sit in the garden next to the run with my laptop. Oh my gosh - what is happening to me - am becoming a crazy chook person!??!!
craftyhunnypie
Oh it's lovely when you get delivery of your eglu & first chooks. You get to clip their wings & hold them and you have this big beamy smile on your face forever more. You will have your tea outside with them and when you go grocery shopping, your trolley will be full of tins of sweetcorn & cabage! You will find yourself looking out the window a lot, just looking at your shiny new eglu & your lovely chooks! They are right characters! Let them know who's boss from day one - do not succumb to letting them out at 5am. Mine get let out between 7 & 8am, usually 8am and most of the time they tootle off to bed themselves. Occassionally they won't go to bed, but so long as the run door is shut and they have food and water they are ok, it actually gives you a lie in the next day - cos they will already be out pecking away! You will be forever checking the nest for that special present & when your 1st egg arrives it is so so special! Yay to chooks!!!!! craftyhunnypie
Hiya - I bet you are all itchy toes today! I woke up this morning thinking hooray it's now cube month!!!! As mine is coming on the 14th! Perhaps I should have had green, then they could have dropped mine off after yours! Garden Poultry are excellent! They do a bird called Copper Rock which is very much like a pepperpot colour! I think they lay dark eggs too. I have ordered mine. I'm having a white comet, a coral & a blue comet. They are all lovley birds and well cared for. I'd take your wellies tho. We went in our crocs and because of all the rain, it was muddy & we ended up washing our feet under his outdoor tap! They have cardboard boxes to bring them home in, so no need to worry about anything. You must post pictures on here when it's all set up, we will all be soooooo envious! How long til it arrives now? AJuff
My children loved the names you called them. They think if you got an evil hen you could call it Voldamort!
Ladylucan
I have had my chooks a few years now, and i have a bench just outside their run, and i still sit out there with my cup of tea and chat with them, watch them and can sit there for hours, Trust me, the facination never wears off. They are brilliant, they all have their own characters and little quirks. I just love them to bits, x and trust me you will tooo
Cheshire Chooks
Well we are now chicken owners. The man from omlet was great and took a couple of hours to erect the cube and rablu. We were very impressed at his chicken tutorial and we held the 2 gingernuts while he clipped the wings. We then went to garden poultry and were amazed at how few chickens were left from their 600 of just a few weeks ago. Choice was limited but we decided to press on rather than wait until their new delivery on Friday. We got a copper black, a sussex comet and another dark bird with white speckles on the breast whose name escapes me! The field is now bone dry! They protested on the way home and lots of squawking. Within an hour our first small egg arrived on the roosting bars!!!!! Egg dance then performed. Already the pecking order is being established. They all went to bed as good as gold. The omlet girls are a couple of weeks younger and seem to be in for a hard time over the next few days. THey are Ginger, Harriet, Daisy, Florence and Betty. The main problem has been the dreadful smell which is worrying us a lot. If this continues we are in for complaints. We have added garlic to their water but I guess it will take a few days for this to show benefit. We have added citronella to the trays. Any other suggestions would be gratefully received. The rabbits, normally kept in a naturally lit cellar, seem to love the rablu. All in all a really good day. It was topped when we locked our 12 and 16 year olds in the rablu!!!! Egluntyne
All in all a really good day. It was topped when we locked our 12 and 16 year olds in the rablu!!!! How tall are they!! Congratulations on getting the hens.
Cheshire Chooks
The 16 year old girl is 5 ft 10"!!!!!! NSPCC already involved!!!!!!!!!!! Smell seems less obvious this morning. Wonder if stress of yesterday led to unusually bad poo
farrowy
Cheshire Chooks - it's so exciting isn't it!! Wish I'd taken the plunge sooner now. Really didn't want to go to work and leave them today - looking forward to getting home tonight. Agree the Omlet bloke was very good at answering all my questions, and it was good to be shown how to pick them up/hold them. I was fretting about how to get them to bed and was checking on them every 15 mins - until at about 9.30 I looked outside and they had put themselves to bed!! Anyone reading this and trying to decide if they should start keeping chooks - go for it!! I've had a big smile on my face since yesterday!!! Snowy
Congratulations both of you on your new chooks - they are great aren't they? They do seem to do worse poos at first, I think it is down to the stress of settling in a new home. It soon gets better! Citronella helps, I clean the eglus out with ecover multisurface cleaner which also leaves a nice lemony smell. Also the red mite powder smells of lavender. It can take a bit of effort, but it is achievable - pretty smelling chickens! Photos soon please both of you!
Lovemychooks
Congratulations on your new chooks, they are the best animals in the world I too would love to see pics of both your chickens, Craftyhunniepie & Cheshire Chooks because i've never seen a copper black, sussex comet, coral, blue comet or copper rock !!! Someone had pics of a silver laced wyandotte (and for the life of me I can't remember who it was) and fell in love with them so am very intrigued to see what these are like
