My sister-in-law gave my son a belated 21st gift on Boxing Day (not a problem, his birthday was in June but we don't often see her).

 

She gave him a bracelet - bit like a Pandora plaited one but for blokes. Unfortunately, he's just not the type to wear jewellery at all and in any case it's far too big. He did well to mask his true feelings so I don't think she realised.

 

I feel it's a shame to just stick it in a drawer as she probably spent quite a lot on it. I wondered about putting it on Ebay and buying him something else more useful. What would you do?

 

Her son will be 21 on 4th January - pity I can't just give it to him, he probably would like it. Next problem - what to get him .

Could you take it back to the shop and swap it for something like a watch or something he might actually use?

I agree with Janepie. If it is something easily identifiable, like pandora or named brand, they will usually swap even without a receipt. It's definitely worth asking.

 

One year we had a birthday party for DS and he got the same present a large number of times - obviously the in gift that year - it was a certain lego item. Anyway we had no idea where they were bought from but asked in the local toy shop. They said we sell it so bring them in and and he can pick something else. He ended up with a really decent present as he swapped the duplicates out for one item.

 

If not then eBay is a good idea and he can get something he would like.

Hmmm, while I think eBay may be an option, there are an awful lot of those sort of bracelets listed, both real & fake, so it may not go for much. Either way you will lose up to 50% of its value straight away, as it is now second hand, so you are def better off taking it back if you can.

Could you perhaps ask her as it was too big and say he wants to get something that fits better,then if he changes it to something completely different you can explain it was his choice.

That's not a bad idea. I do feel a bit ungrateful so that might be a good compromise.

Personally I would probably keep it and stash it away for now at least - no one said you have to love your 21st gifts

Since you don't see your SIL very often, she obviously didn't know your son's size or tastes, but she made the effort to get something, probably wondering whether it was the right thing or not. In her shoes, I'd rather think he had something that he'd use and enjoy. I'd try and exchange it if you can.

 

I don't have any scruples about 'regifting' or exchanging things, it's the thought that counts, not the gift itself, but I'd be wary of selling on eBay. My friend once saw the gift she'd given her SIL on eBay the next day!

I have emailed SIL to ask if it's possible to change it for a smaller size. I know now that it was bought in a "real" shop so it might be possible to do. ES is more likely to wear it if it actually fits so we'll try that route first. I agree it feels a little churlish to get rid of it so quickly.

 

I have solved her son's 21st present problem though .

Mother bought me a big Paddington bear-esque coat for my 22nd a few weeks ago and I had to tell her I didn't like it.

I went to the shops the next day and bought a more functional black Karrimor coat which I knew I would wear and wore it all day it every day in New York where it was -11oC!

 

Truth is the best policy for me
