Introducing vaccinated hens to non vaccinated ones?

Recommended Posts

I would like to add a couple of hens from a breeder that vaccinated, but am concerned that this might poses risk to my girls who have not been vaccinated. Could anyone advise me, the breed says they will be fine, maybe I should just leave my flock as they are and resist the morehens disease I am suffering from?

I am by no means an expert but my understanding is it is recommend not mixing unvaccinated and vaccinated birds. Having said that DH had mentioned she has a friend that had a mix flock and have had no problems.

My vet said the vaccinated hens secrete the live virus. I assume from the live vaccine and could potentially infect unvaccinated hens. I am only ever going to have ex commercial girls so it isn't an issue for me.

Some interesting info on the thread breeding for resistance

If I could offer any help, I would say get lots of advice then make an informed decision x

I have recently been struggling with a similar situation chuckmum6. I have recently had blood from our poorly silkie that died just before Xmas confirmed to be positive with Mareks. I was gutted as I had planned to hatch more silkies via incubator this year. After lots of research and asking many questions here on omlet I have decided that I will vaccinate the chicks I hatch.

I have only today managed to speak to a vet who answered all my questions and queries and set my mind at rest. I contacted a vet that deals a lot with poultry to see if I could get the vaccine from them and had a very helpful conversation . Firstly he agreed that he thought i was doin the right thing. I asked because the vaccine was a live vaccine whether it would pass to the others that haven't been vaccinated ( although they may have the virus I was bothered bout a different strain) he said it wouldn't pass on but I could also give the older birds the vaccine. So a little resistance is better than none at all.

Personally I have found that there are a lot of people with different opinions, all of which is very helpful but a little confusing. Maybe speak to a vet? :)
