A new Hen owner

Recommended Posts

Hi folks,

So I finally have my hens, they are amazing and I'm looking forward to them providing eggs and garden entertainment.

I have a sunnyside blue called Bernadette/Bernie

A Rhode Island cross called Red and a white leghorn with the best name ever... Zeno Warrior Chicken!!! (OH named her)

They are still very shy but my collie likes she has new friends in the garden. I can see her thinking about attempting to herd them.

Chickens are so entertaining

Without this forum I am sure I would have lost the plot....I don't DO Facebook,Twitter, friends reunited or any of the other plethora of social networking sites (personal thing....don't want to snoop on the kids and I know I would!!!) but this really is a fantastic friendly forum

Since you have a Sunnyside Blue I would guess you bought your hens from Sunnyside Poultry?

If so then I always buy my girls from there, I have been really pleased with my flock (some 4 years old and still laying).

I am in Burton On Trent.

Of course if it is just a coincidence that it is called a sunnyside blue the I appear to be weird stalker so should give myself a talking to.

Welcome to the world of chicken keeping but beware the very infectious morehens disease, everyone starts off with just 3 hens then within 6 months you find life is not complete unless you get another 6 hens, you raid skips for cable drums and other junk to make toys for the chickens, every birthday and Christmas you will be given chicken themed items (one year I was given 4 pairs of chickeny oven gloves).

Enjoy your girls

My OH has just read my original post and told me off about getting his chickens name wrong. It is Xena Warrior Chicken.

Yes I bought them from Sunnyside, I went on the course last November and had them nearly a week now. They ventured into the garden for the first time today and they loved it :)

There's nothing quite like those first chicken arrivals. It really took me back to childhood levels of excitement when I got my first chooks - 4 years ago now. You've got them at a lovely time of year in that the weather will (surely) be getting better and better and the daylight hours longer so you can spend lots of happy hours with them and get them nice and tame and friendly. :D Hope you have plenty of mealworms
