Elliebop
I have very broody chickens, as I've just been reading others on here do too!!! My question is: will it cause problems putting them in the cage to stop their broodiness if they are still laying? Mine have all continued to lay eggs for a few days into their broodiness. I put Anastasia, my pekin into the cage yesterday, as she has been broody since the middle of last week and the other 2 are sitting on her to lay their eggs, so it's causing distress for all, but she was still laying up to Saturday. She's not laid since being in the cage, of course, but should I wait until they stop laying before putting them in the cage. I do worry about mostly everything, and now I'm worried that she may get egg-bound. Any advice would be very gratefully received.
Redwing
If the hen is still laying they aren't fully in broody mode. its usually very easy to break them by hooking them off the nest every time you pass the coop
Millie-Annie
Didn't work for me, she was still laying for a few days, I used to get her up 3-4 times a day, and she still went into full broody mode. I think I would wait until she has stopped laying, and then move her into the crate. Issey has been broody for over 4 weeks, but hopefully two days in the side run on her own seems to have worked. Chickabee
I take my silkie off the nest about 3 times a day. She has a big drink, an enormous poo , a bit to eat. Then back to the nest
Elliebop
Thank you for the replies (not been able to get online for a bit!) I took my broody pekin, Annastasia, out of the cage after just the one day, as she had been still laying prior to that, and the broodiness stopped, but she stopped laying too!! Hopefully she'll get back right soon. She looks fine and is currently very friendly, which is a bonus as she's not the friendliness chuck. Meanwille Tatiana went broody, but was still laying until Monday, so I took the hoiking-her-out-of-the-nest-box-regularly approach, and she snapped out of it herself yesterday and laid an egg today!! I'm looking forward to when I feel I've got the hang of this chicken-keeping business!!!
