New chickens -infection?

Recommended Posts

Hi I'm new to the forum & wondered if anyone could help.

I had chickens a few years ago that unfortunately caught a respiratory infection, most were successfully treated with onicure but 2 sadly died. After this my flock became a closed flock and lived out the rest of their days quite happily without any further illness. My vet advised me to wait a few weeks before getting my next flock and to sterilise the ground and all equipment which I did . I was so afraid of any new birds getting infected I waited 2 years before getting my next chickens thinking that it couldn't possibly happen again. I picked up my new chickens on Saturday, they settled in really well but on Monday I noticed that my speckled Sussex was keeping one eye closed, other than that she is eating well and behaving normally. Today her eye was open and looked fine so I thought maybe I was overreacting but in the last hour she has started closing it for a few seconds then opening it again & my buff orpington's eye looks a bit puffy :(

I am hoping that it doesn't develop into anything but I am terrified that it might. Has anyone had any experience of reoccurring respiratory infections? Is it possible that my new birds have picked up an infection this quickly? Do you think I should contact the breeder for advise?

Hope someone can help me thank you

Hi sometimes when chickens move to their new homes they don't deal with the stress that well and it can bring out underlying illnesses do you have anything like herban you could pop in their water also do they have any other symptoms it wouldn't hurt to just contact the breeder for advice and I don't think it has anything to do with your other birds leanne :)

Thank you so much for your reply Leanne :)

They don't have any other symptoms they are eating & drinking well, are active and vocal and are interested in their new surroundings. I have been monitoring them closely since they arrived 1 hen occasionally closes one eye for a few seconds at a time and the other has a puffy eye but she keeps it open. They don't show any signs of being unwell thankfully but that doesn't stop me worrying! I will get some herban ASAP and speak to the breeder tomorrow for advice. Thank you for putting my mind at ease about my previous birds your support is much appreciated, I have become a bit paranoid after past experiences!

Thank you
