Jury service - suit or scruffy?

Recommended Posts

I'm doing jury service starting next Monday and would like advice please on what to wear  ?

I have jacket/skirt suits for work, mainly black jackets and variations on cream/black/hint of colour tops and skirts. They're comfy enough, as I wear them to work every day, but quite formal and I don't want to look like I should be presenting the evidence rather than listening to it  .

Otherwise, I have outdoors-ey clothes that are suitable for walking dogs in a muddy field - Craghoppers trousers, fleeces, t-shirts. Nothing that could be described as "smart casual", even my jeans are scruffy looking.

Omleteer advice please on which is best for the occasion, suit or scruffy?

In between suit and scruffy. A suit is definitely not required. I dressed as though I was going to work in a normal office but really jeans are fine so I changed after the first day. You have to bear in mind that the seats are incredibly uncomfortable ( I was in an old crown court ) so comfort in your clothes is a priority

I would always suggest a suit for jury service, I believe it shows respect for the job you're doing. If a case is in court it is important to everyone and would have already involved a huge amount of work. My opinion is that it is something to be taken seriously, your decision could have a profound affect on a number of people and you should dress accordingly.

In fact I taught my boys that if they're ever in doubt, wear a suit. They look good, fit most formal occasions and it's better to be the only one wearing a suit than the only one wearing jeans. You might stand out but for the right reasons.

I was on a 2 week case in an old crown court (possibly the same place as you Chickendoodle :D ) and it was the middle of winter, very wet and very cold and I had a 20 minute walk to the court. I wore jeans everyday, with T-shirt and jumper and scarf - not scruffy, but comfy. You could only see the top half of us all in any case once we were seated in the jury box  I honestly can't remember what anybody had on, but it wasn't overly smart, some people had cycled into court. I would very firmly say you should just be comfortable and if work skirts are comfy then go for that! Being a juror can be a massive experience, there is an awful lot to concentrate on and the last thing you want to be thinking about is your clothing. Also, there is a lot of sitting about waiting for things to happen so layering is key, so you are comfortable no matter where you are in the court building.

There is an awful lot of sitting around - you might sit for days in the holding room and never actually get on to a jury. Comfort without being too scruffy is the key. The whole idea of a jury is that it is a random mix of people so there will naturally be a random mix of clothing. If there were 12 suited jurors it would not look or be random -(in fact I think it would look pretty intimidating to the defendant) so there is certainly no expectation that you wear a suit (you are a member of the public after all, not a magistrate)

On one of my juries we had an unemployed single mother, me (insurance broker), teacher, supermarket assistant...., I doubt if any owned a suit - I certainly don't.

The people who wore suits or quite formal clothing generally toned it down considerably by day 2. I think the belief when you haven't done jury service is that you should dress formally, but when you are actually doing it the reality is quite different.

Good luck. Take a good book/kindle and remember that you are not allowed metal cutlery (I stupidly took a fork to eat my pasta salad and had it confiscated. Ended up with very messy fingers!)

Ideally something in between.

There isn't anything wrong with wearing jeans, lots of people wore them when I was on jury service.

I wouldn't wear scruffy clothes though.

There are two reasons for this. Firstly, it does show a slight disrespect for the whole system. But, more importantly, it may affect how your fellow jurors view you (and therefore view your opinions). I know it shouldn't, but it can and does.

If you don' have non-scruffy casual clothes, then I would wear whatever you would normally wear to the office.

As others have said, there is *a lot* of waiting around.

Thank you everyone, just the advice I was hoping for :D

Kindle is already charged up and ready to go, and I was intending to take food and water, so I can be certain of entertainment and food!

remember that you are not allowed metal cutlery

Thank you Chickendoodle, I'd never even thought about that

Think it's going to be office-wear and I can always take a jacket off, if it's warm enough. Skirt and top and comfy shoes shouldn't look too bad. If it's very hot, I do have a couple of reasonably smart casual summer dresses, but they would look a bit too cheerful on a rainy day.
