The Dogmother
I would like to dye a cardigan; my aunt very kindly gave me an almost new cashmere cardi, and while the style is great, the colour isn't me at all. I'd like to dye it a more useful colour and wondered what sort of dye to use and how to go about it. The cardigan is a light turquoise, s presumably the original colour will have some effect on how the end colour turns out.
Vivihen
You will need to use an acid dye. 'Rainbow Silks' is a good site with next day delivery (usually). Think carefully about your colour choice of dye colour, stick to primary colours if you don't want a sludgy brown. E.g. pink/red for purple/mauve, yellow for a green, or blue to alter the shade. If you want a particular shade of colour try using paints to experiment.
Jennifer Jane
I've only dyed undyed yarn at a workshop run by Debbie Tomkies of DT Craft & Design. We used Procion Dye & tried mixing colours and as Vivihen says, it is very easy to end up with a sludgy colour! Different yarns take colour differently, and unfortunately you won't have something to test on. There are instructions on Debbie's website which may help. I had great fun at the workshop and amazingly I came out with some beautifully dyed yarn to take away Think it will become a scarf or shawl...
