auntielizzie
After I took my poorly Bertha to the vets today, I realised when I got home that she has lice! I guess they are lice; they are quite small, and look sort of a beige/goldy brown colour. They are only a couple of mm long but are long rather than round in shape. I couldn;t see any evidence of eggs though. I checked Bessie tonight after they'd gone to bed and she has got them too Again, can't see any clusters of eggs. I don't know how long they will have had them and I guess the other two have got them as well. I suppose this could explain Bessie's red bare bottom and Bertha's feather loss Betsy and Beaky seem ok feather-wise though. They certainly aren't covered in them, but I did see a few on each of them. What is the best treatment - spot-on, powder or drops??? What a day! Lavenders_Blue
Yes they are lice, and if one girl has them, they will all have them as they spread easily from bird to bird. They are very easy to treat with Johnson's Anti-Mite spray. It's for caged birds, so not licensed for use on chickens, but perfectly safe to use. Give the girls a good spray all over - under the vent, under the wings and back of the neck. Part the feathers and spray onto the skin as the spray needs to zap the actual beasties. Then repeat a week later to catch any eggs that might have hatched. There is a 48 hour egg withdrawal period after each application.
