danb_1985
I made my purchase today. Got 3 point of lay chickens. I got a Rhode Rock, Gingernut Ranger and an Amber. All pecking away and son very excited. Looking forward to the first egg! Also bought an extension for the run which will take it past 4 metres and also an automatic door to fit tomorrow. All looking good! Thanks all for the answers I've had in preparation.

danb_1985
Is it normal on the first night for hens not to sleep on perches? 2out of 3 are cuddling in a nest box??
Cat tails
They might not be used to perches yet and will get the hang of it in their own time. Some chickens will roost in nestboxes even when laying. They like to snuggle up together.
danb_1985
Yeah they are snuggling. If I could post a pic I would. Cheers
jackian
Welcome to the wonderful world of chicken keeping All my girls sleep in the nest boxes all snuggled up together . You just need to poo pick after they come out in the morning so they can lay their eggs. Jackie x
gavclojak
Is it normal on the first night for hens not to sleep on perches? 2out of 3 are cuddling in a nest box?? I would try to discourage them from sleeping in the nest box, try popping a football or plant pot in there at night. You can poop pick in the morning but in the heat it does foul quickly and encourages mites and a whole host of other nasties...as cute as they look, I would stop it becoming a habit. Congratulations on getting your girls, you will spend ages just watching their antics, they are so entertaining.
danb_1985
Yeah they've left a mess in the box so going to have to clean it out. Do they normally lay during the day?
PixieDust
Ooooh how exciting. Can't wait to see some pics
mullethunter
Yes they lay during the day (although I have had one very late evening). Mine don't have any particular time though, can be anything from mid morning to late afternoon - apparently the egg cycle is either a little over or a little under 24hrs - I can't remember which! gavclojak
Yes they will lay during the day, mine usually lay between 10am and 2 PM....well when they lay.....mine are coming to the end of their laying cycle now, so am maybe getting one egg per day, lazy girls If I am right, when they are established layers, it takes 26 hours for them to produce an egg so they will lay around the same time plus an hour every day with around one day off a week.
