Found this old pic of me taken in 1978.

I loved my uniform then, it was beautifully tailored but it was totally impractical as I found when I tried to chase burglars over a tall wall.

Personally I have never felt comfortable since policemen gave up wearing those iconic tall helmets in favour of the flat cap variety And, as for policemen looking younger these days, Chief Constables are looking postively youthful

I'm not sure 1978 constitutes 'ancient' history! Definitely a great picture though, and an ever better mental picture of you trying to chase burglars over a wall in an impeccably tailored but impractical uniform

Patsy - you look stunning - i bet you got chatted up a lot. Uniforms I found were very impractical an being tall the silly nurses hat I had to wear often got knocked off on the curtain rails round pts beds. I think trousers are more practical myself.

Alisgirls - well I met my husband at work. We used to patrol together! I've put that photo together in a little montage with him in his uniform. It's quite romantic.

ANH - I did have to hoik my skirt up, the wall was huge and I think adrenaline got me over. I ripped my tights, my hat fell off and the handbag was a right nuisance. I didn't get anything for it either, the dogs found the burglars first.

I still wear a beat helmet, more often than my flat cap to be honest

Can't remember when I last saw a beat officer round here full stop! Occasionally we have a couple of PCSO s but I think they must be on work experience as they look about 13!
