mullethunter
Certainly sounds like you're doing the right things. You really have been in at the deep end! Hopefully she'll continue to improve
PixieDust
No improvement. Still very lively for food but hunches when I leave the run. She has quite a number of new feathers coming underneath, I wonder if that would be making he feel rubbish too? Saw the Sussex peck at her ear as she was hunched and sleepy earlier and I told it off. Truly at a loss now
The Dogmother
It 'could' be a very bad/severe moult, but it sounds as if there's something else going on.
PixieDust
Don't really know. Just had a call from the vet and he is happy for them to stay on Tylan til next Tuesday maybe a little longer.
PixieDust
Well Sick Pob has been jumping on my arm to feed and being generally very chatty. Yesterday I had to go to my Mum's nursing home Christmas party so OH gave them corn and locked them up for the night. Yesterday morning I noticed she was a little more hunched and sneezing more - in fact the mucus was interfering with her eating a little bit. I also saw she tried twice to get into the coop but slipped off ladder. Last night was the coldest we have had since they arrived. This morning she took ages to come out of the coop and didn't eat or drink. Even mealworms could not tempt her. I managed to get some Nutridrops into her. I sat her on the coop as I cleaned to pull out floor as I know she always enjoyed that. She slowly waddled over to me and was looking to jump up but couldn't. She would come up to me and lean against me. I did pick her up and took her for a walk around the garden in the sun. She seemed to take everything in and like the warming sunshine. When I put her back in the run she just slunk down on the floor. So I put her in the coop and the same. OH brought down a plastic dog carrier and I lined that with Aubiose and put her in there. Again she just flopped down. I left her in the insulated drum room at the back of the garage. I went back a couple of hours later and she was standing. She has water and some meal worms but they don't look touched. I went in 20 minutes ago just to see if she was ok and found her sneezing furiously and she had had terrible diarrhea. It was an opaque green, milky liquid with a little white urates dotted through it and some darker green bits too.
Beantree
She's in a bad way PixieDust. The poo says she has a serious digestive impaction but her condition means she wouldn't survive treatment. The green bits may indicate an infection and the lack of solids means it may be a digestive infection that is blocking her up. My guess is this morning she will have a full crop that isn't clearing. I think you need to take her to the vet one last time.
The Dogmother
I agree; I would despatch her.
PixieDust
Yes we had decided this. Obviously a Sunday night was not going to be a sensible time. Will be phoning ASAP. She had stopped eating pellets a couple of days ago but was eating other stuff with gusto. I just wonder what it all was? She was never right. Sneezing badly again yesterday and the others still sneeze. Although I don't begrudge her any of this as she couldn't help it, it has been a nightmare start to keeping chickens and I can't even replace her. Will update later. Beantree
You've been very unlucky indeed PixieDust. I think these immunisation programmes cause more problems than they solve. The birds are bombarded with far too much now and that will affect all of them to some extent. Would it not be better just to breed healthy stock in the right environment? The likelihood then of them getting ill from wild bird infections is pretty slim I think. Whilst Mycroplasma abounds, a healthy bird will be unaffected by it. A breeder told us he thought IB only existed in the immunisation form now so pointless administering it. Both have side effects. Also ILT can flare up for many years afterwards we have discovered, although we originally read it was only two. Our cockerel has the same swollen eye this morning he had 6 years ago and has lost his appetite again because he has a sore throat.
PixieDust
At this point I should just stick with the 3 I have and wait to see what occurs. I wouldn't mind but she was my favourite because she liked me. Very interested in everything I did. The rest are all a bit off this morning. They came out of the coop and instead of rushing to eat, they wandered around almost looking for her. The final journey appointment is 11.10am
Luvachicken
I'm so sorry to read about dear little Pob. You tried so hard to make her better and I know how you will be feeling today having been in the same place last week. You did your very best for her and that is all any of us can do. I hope your other girls keep well. Sleep tight little Pob and have fun with Queenie xx
