Inflexible colleague gripe of the day

Recommended Posts

I am so irritated! Maybe it's because I have been struck down with seasonal flu but I had to call my receptionist yesterday as I was unable to get in to work, it was the first day off in 6 years I jest you not, even during 4 weeks of radiotherapy I arranged my appointments for the afternoon so worked in the morning and went straight for my treatment from work. I'm really not a martyr, I prefer to work that sit around feeling sorry for myself.

The response I got yesterday was "oh I need to see if I can change my plans and better get a wriggle on"

I know I sound a bit harsh but she makes it so difficult to book holidays etc I find I end up working half the week I've booked off and when I am off I get several calls during the day about the most ridiculous things.

What is bizarre is I'm the boss!!

Thanks DM, all policies and working practice policy in place, called her the day before to warn her I might be off and a text in the morning. She covered but makes it difficult, it's funny isn't it, when you interview someone, they can be flexible, they can cover holidays etc etc i know I'm generalising but it's because I feel like death in a plate:((

Stick to your guns! Say very clearly when you are on leave, you will not be coming into work and you will not be answering phone calls and mean it. Resist the urge to go in and do not answer your phone if it is a work number - if in doubt, let it go through to the answering machine to check who it is. It sounds like a passive/aggressive control thing by your subordinate and, if you do not play her game, she cannot play it either.

Says the person to had to physically hide their blackberry so they didn't answer work emails all weekend . It was the red flashing light, I couldn't resist the red flashing light. I was ok once I couldn't see the red flashing light ...

Hope you feel better soon (and I'm sure his was just a cold!)

Hang on ... You are the boss if I read that correctly. She needs telling.

She actually got told today! I am still off work:(. went to GP and I have a triple whammy of chest infection, tonsillitis and sinusitis, I can honestly say I have never felt so rough for so long, my friend actually had to drive me. I'm now on antibiotics which I wanted to avoid but couldn't last out any longer. As for my colleague, she was told to get on with her contractual obligations otherwise I was happy to take 28 days notice, unfortunately I had to do this by text as im unable to speak, but she got the gist!

Well done. But it can't help when your staff are trying to the extreme. Stress over that isn't doing your immune system any good. Now you have control back and I really hope you rest and get better.

OH has his own business too and I get so angry when we are on holiday and he takes calls from his subordinate (I have a few gripes here with that female - although I'd like to say something really rude but showing a bit of restraint!). But had to laugh when we were in Scotland and no signal for a whole week.
