chickencam
Got home from work this evening to discover that the boiler has died . Please could you helpful Omlet people give me some pointers about what to look out for if we need to have it replaced. The current one is best part of 30 years old and owes us nothing and from a quick internet search it looks like spares are no longer available. We would like to have a shower put over the bath which would run off the boiler and maybe replace our current electric shower in the en suite with a boiler one too. I have asked a few friends locally for recommendations for a hearing engineer. Thanks
mullethunter
Do you have / want a hot water tank?
chickencam
We have a tank and an airing cupboard at the moment. The pump from the heating system is in the airing cupboard so I am hoping that if we do away with the rank then I will be able to have a small radiator in there to keep it as an airing cupboard. I do love my airing cupboard.
Beantree
Sounds like you will be re-plumbing the house Chickencam! Replacing a boiler can have some complex and expensive side effects. If you would like to PM, perhaps I can explain the options in detail?
Egluntyne
I would keep one electric shower if I were you. We were very glad that we had done this when our boiler conked out a few years ago. We would have been without the means to shower for a couple of weeks otherwise.
chickencam
I have just come to the same conclusion. I realised that without it this morning I would be having a very cold wash
chickencam
Now no hot water either because the Immersion heater has also packed up it worked for one tank of water then no more. . Down to an electric shower for cleaning ourselves and a log burner and a couple of fan heaters to heat a four bedroom end house. At least there are only three of here at the moment so less rooms to heat. It is OH's 50th on Saturday and ED was going to come home, but he is advising her not to because she has raynaulds and will get very cold. chickencam
Happily we managed to find an engineer and he came pretty much straight out took the bottom cover off turned the k"Ooops, word censored!" and it fired up straight away. We had tried this and nothing He was a really nice chap and said that it was probably the valve in the airing cupboard that was sticking and had confused the boiler, but couldn't be sure it could just have got some dirt in it that was dislodged. He said that hopefully it will be ok for a while but he is going to give us some options and prices for replacement. He didn't even want to take any money because he said that he hadn't really done anything, but he was with us for half an hour and gave us some good advice so we gave him some money to buy himself a few drinks. I will definitely get him out to do a couple of odd jobs, like changing a couple of old taps etc, hopefully we have found a good one
