Cat tails
I think Ginger had a try at being broody this morning. Nutmeg had already layed her egg (egg song, yes... she learned it ). Ginger went to lay, but took ages! Cinnamon wanted to lay too, so popped in and out and in again and out... Heard Ginger screeching in the nestbox to send Cinnamon out again. Cinnamon sort of resigned and cued in the entrance of the Go. I went in and had a look what they were up to. Ginger was sitting in the nestbox and when I short of shuffled her to the side, found two eggs. (Hers and Nutmeggs) She was sitting on them, being nice and puffy, but no screeching to me. I just shoved her out and gave them some kibble from the cat. Cinnamon went in to lay, looking relieved and Ginger hasn't been in again. Luckily she isn't much of a consistent layer, so a next egg might still take a few days.
The Dogmother
I'd keep an eye on her then as it sounds as if she might be thinking about it.
Cat tails
I'm certainly planning to, but I doubt she will go for it. She thinks the whole egg laying business is to much effort and has no patience to speak of. She hasn't been into the Go since I chucked her out and Cinnamons egg was cold when I went to fetch it. She is the chicken that will come racing out of the Go, if she think there is some food to get and then lay her egg in the run, because she wasn't done yet. Cat tails
Found another egg in the run today... Ginger is the most impatient chicken ever! On the up side, no sign of broodyness so far!
mullethunter
Lucky you Penny is back in the broody cage...exactly a month after the last time
Cat tails
I doubt she will go for it in all it's fullness. She is just such a kid. Attention span of... well... a headless chicken and wants to try everything. Think that was the case here too. Hopefully Penny snaps out of it quickly. The Dogmother
A couple of mine tried it on when we had that warm spell earlier, but one of them was easily dissuaded, and t'other went in The Cage of Shame.
Minnie&Moose
We currently have 2 broody pekins and a broody cochin and only one 'cage of shame' I'm just waiting for the other 3 pekins and a humungous Orpington to join in! I have a thing for big and little fluffies so I've only myself to blame
The Dogmother
I came home to find one of my pekins - the fluffiest bird I have ever had - flat on the nest and shrieking at me fair enough, she was on an egg, although it wasn't hers. I lobbed her off, tossed her up to flap and get a big of cooler air under her wings, and shut them all out of the nest box for the night - we'll see how she is tomorrow. mullethunter
I bet I know how she'll be tomorrow
The Dogmother
The weather is getting cooler, so there's a chance she might cool down, but I won't bet on it!
Cat tails
So far no other signs from Ginger. Found two eggs in the nest box and no chicken hissing on it, so I guess she decided it wasn't for her.
Minnie&Moose
Got home to find the cube nest box full of a broody cochin and a broody maran (one of last year's chicks) so that makes 4 broodies & one broody cage. The neighbours are going to think I'm crazy if I set them all up in their own broody cages given we've just rehomed 3 ex-batts
The Dogmother
My pekin is definitely broody. Will cage her up this evening.
Cat tails
Went to check on the chooks as Ginger had been in the nestbox for quite some time this morning. Found a broken softie, lots of mess and Ginger still trying to shuffle around the remains. She was not really happy the last few days, still chirping and being incredibly nosey and a glutton, but walking around with her tail down. So I was expecting an softie and here it was. Chucked the chooks out, into the border, were they are normally not allowed, to busy themselves, while I cleaned the Go. Ginger was incredibly eager to go back in the coop. She is now shuffling around in the nestbox and will check in a while what she is up to. Her tail was up again though, so she must be feeling a little better. The Dogmother
That's good news My Millelfeur pekin is out of hte Cage of Shame and back to bossing everyone around inthe garden, but the 9/10 year old lavender pekin is (predictably ) in there now.
