Do NOT read if easily upset

Recommended Posts

Hi

Hope its OK to post this - if not, please remove. Ta.

Talked to BHWT staff at edible garden show on Saturday and can't get one thing out of my head.

They did a rescue a few days ago and were going to bring a few of the hens to the show but they were in too poor a state as the farmer hadn'd fed them for their last 3 days as it wasn't worth it !

Made my blood boil - surely its illegal? How/why can some people see them as mere egg producing 'objects' ?

I guess the BHWT can't do anything as he'd probably

a. deny it

b. wouldn't pass them on to the BHWT in future.

Very sad but as you say, he would probably deny it.

I've heard of farmers doing a forced moult where they reduce feed for a week to moult the flock all at the same time.

Glad to hear that some of the girls have been rehomed to enjoy a happy retirement.

Disgraceful isn't it. I rehome with the BHWT and when removing from the colony units the way some farmers handle the hens is outrageous, that are treated as nothing more than commodities, no respect or care but we have to keep out mouths shut for fear of offending them so we do...not all of the farms we visit are like that but too many.

I think that and the hens that die during the process is the most upsetting part, those poor girls don't even get a chance but you have to think of the ones who get to enjoy the sun and have a happy retirement

I have nightmares about the ones left behind too

All hens are starved for at least 24 hours before slaughter, that's standard practice but three days....beggars belief!
