Luvachicken
Just wondered what are the best containers for things like flour and sugar. I fancied some nice containers instead of just folding the top - and keeping out flour mite. Do flour mite arrive in the flour or are they secretly living in my cupboard but never seen ? Which are the best and where from ?
Blackrocksrock
The best tip I had was to keep my flour in the freezer as it stops the mites completely and it does not alter the flour you use to bake at all. Sugar I just keep in the packet folded over!!

clucker1
I use Kilner jars for everything except flour. Flour I get through so quickly, can't see the point in transferring it into a jar. I did get flour mites some 30 years ago but then I wasn't using so much flour.
Olly
The mites are in the flour, and freezing it before use will stop them developing/increasing, or so I understand. I keep all my flour in lock-and-lock type containers (cheaper versions usually) as I find it easier to weigh it out and I get less spillage than keeping it in the bags. The Range or Home Bargains or similar have plastic cereal containers that are a good size.
Luvachicken
Thanks everyone Will definitely put my flour in the freezer from now on. Presumably once it's been in there for long enough to kill the mites I can put it back in the cupboard ? Have The Range nearby so could get some things from there. bluekarin
I freeze my flour when I buy it and as my kilner jar empties, I top it up. If you do go the Kilner jar route, buy one much bigger than the bag of flour, otherwise you have to do what I do and tamp it down to fit the entire bag in I was using 2lt icecream tubs previously, which fit a bag nicely, as long as you don't empty it. I have had flour mites once and had to throw away all my baking stuff. I was gutted. I did a huge clean of all the drawers, not just the baking drawer, and *touch wood* I've not had any more. I put this down to the bag freezing.
