AndyRoo
Hello Has anyone here made their own wine? I'm thinking of giving it a go. Any tips? Or recommendations for equipment? Thanks, Andy
Grandmashazzie
I tried this many years ago, with a kit. It had to sit somewhere warm. For us this was at the turn of the stairs, next to our neighbours solid fuel heating. Long story short, we dropped it bringing it to kitchen. And of course it was red wine. We stuck to Tesco after that.

merlina
My mother used to make loads of what we would probably now call 'country' wine. They were mostly fabulous - especially the dandelion (rather like a saunternes) There was also elderflower and elderberry and sloe and occasionally rosehip and blackberry and plum and a few others. There was always a demi john bubbling away in the airing cupboard and a dark corner The recipes were just the fruit/flower, water and sugar - no yeast - apparently natural yeasts work on their own I tried to copy her a few times. Never worked. I suspect my mother's rather casual relationship with hygiene may have helped....

I quite like relatively dry whites, or slightly fruity reds - although my plan was to make fruit based wine. I seem to remember my dad making some when we were younger and it being absolutely dreadful, so I was hoping to do a little better. I've also been thinking about making some homemade cider. Alis girls
Andy will you have time when moving house?. Most I have done is elderflower champagne which isn't alcoholic and my last lot was flat . My mum used to make ginger beer also not alcohol. A friend and husband fed us home made vino many yrs ago in 1980's delicious it was too OH was my b/f then and he drove home sober I was somewhat happy and gibbering in the passenger seat. We lived in Stepney and there was a lot of racial unrest at the time and as we drew up at home the Police pulled him over. Hes Cypriot so dark and swarthy. At this point I became cross and was sent to get his driving licence before being arrested . He was breathalysed and all OK. Boy the hangover was bad next day. Good luck. Lethal stuff. Haha, I'll make time. Once I move I am planning on undertaking several more projects too: counselling and psychology, krav maga, guitar lessons etc. One of the great things in my life right now is that I am working as an author/freelance photographer, so I create my own schedule! I'm only planning on making a fairly typical strength wine, or possibly a strong cider - not moonshine!
