Luvachicken
I bought some pretty Phlox in late summer last year I removed the dead flowers and then in the autumn, trimmed them so they all had shoots of about 3"-4" above the ground. I notice that all the leaves they had have gone black and they are not looking as alive as perhaps they should. Will they show signs of life soon do you think or have they died ? Blackrocksrock
It should come back to life in the spring but I have lost some over the years with frost - mine looks dead right now but hopefully it wont be/
Luvachicken
That's good news then, thank you I will keep an eye on them. I did notice some new rose leaves and a few signs of life on my honeysuckle today and when I cleaned the girls out earlier the birds were singing
sjp
phlox should come back but tend to be treated as an annual Roses and Honey Suckle will keep leaves on all year but Roses will start to grow new shoots at this time of year if they get a bit of sun on them trouble is if we get a hard or late frost it will take the shoots but for some reason if they get pruned late December Percy Thrower used to recommend between Christmas and New Year, new shoots will stand all but a very hard frost trouble is you can't prune roses if it's cold frosty weather mine should have been done this year but I couldn't do them down to the weather
Blackrocksrock
There is an annual version of Phlox but most are perennial - I had a mass of it at the front by the road and only lost it in the bad winter of 2011 when the salt from the gritters on the road killed it off - started again last year so hopefully it will spread again as gives a lovely carpet when you have lots. It is a lovely plant.
Luvachicken
My Phlox are the taller ones but I can picture the little Phlox you are talking about. I hope they weren't annuals as they were quite expensive and I would be annoyed to have spent all that money for them not to grow again.
