Luvachicken
I bought some runner bean plants from the garden centre last year and sadly the label on the pot only said runner beans. They were delicious beans so I saved some of the pods but I don't know when to sow them or whether they need a heated propagator. Also when they have grown, am I right that I have to grow them somewhere different to last year ? I don't actually have much space for them in different places. chickencam
You can wait until the end of April or early May to sow them. Beans do not like the cold. If your plants last year were an F1 variety they may not grow true from the saved seed unfortunately. I would try some bought seed along side them. I have grown beans in the same area for several seasons just dig out some of the soil and replace it with fresh humous rich soil home made compost is great or composed chicken poo
mullethunter
Even in Cornwall I don't sow my runners until mid April
Luvachicken
Thank you both. I'm glad I asked as I was going to do them now. I have no idea if they are an F1 variety or not so will just have to wait and see how they do and what they taste like.
sjp
I've not brought runner bean seed for years I just save seed from one year to the next and they don't tend to drift to far from what they are supposed to be with one exception I scrounged some seed for a 'long' podded runner bean that's throwing a few plants that have black seed and dark red pods as they mature but still retain the length.somewhere along the way it's managed to cross breed with Churchfield Black so I'll just keep growing the two strains to see if I can multiply the black seeded one up to keep both the colour and the length
Luvachicken
That's good to hear sjp I hope they taste as good as they did last year.

Luvachicken
Love your new photo Luv! Ver Springy! Thanks Cat tails It was hard to take off my lovely cocker spaniel Daisy, as she has been on here since I joined Omlet. She has been gone for a good while now, so I thought it was time for a change. They are Mesembryanthemums - one of my favourite summer plants. My Grandma used to have loads of them in her tiny garden and they remind me of her
