Luvachicken
Having checked some of my previous posts, mostly looking for intro advice, I spotted one that introduced Gemma in September 2012. This means she is just over 5 She is not doing too well with the new girls They chase her and she really doesn't like them, nor does Polly. Polly and Gemma stick together and follow each other everywhere. Even when Polly goes to lay an egg she is accompanied by Gemma and Zoe. I was wondering if Gemma is a bit old now for having to bother with the new girls. She is top chook of the older girls but it is Zoe, who is bottom, that puts the new girls in their place. Another post I was reading said that it can take at least 3 weeks for them to sort out the pecking order. We have just finished the first week. Will Gemma ever get her top spot back ? I do feel quite sorry for Gemma and Polly. They were always so strong.
mullethunter
Happy late birthday to Gemma!! I felt really guilty when I brought in 2 new girls last year and one of them bullied little Bernadette, but after a few weeks things did settle down and now Bern just scoots out of the way and hides behind the others if she sees Margot coming. I'm not sure Gemma's age will make much difference - my Wyandottes are coming up to 5 and they are still firmly the top 2 despite Margot having a go. I know it's not very nice when you feel like you've upset the balance and made your existing girls less happy, but I'm sure it'll only be temporary, and I don't think 5 is ancient for a pekin. Luvachicken
Thank you for the reassuring reply mullethunter I think you are right that Pekins can live to be much older, 8 plus maybe. Things seem a little bit calmer today. I've bought them a pumpkin which they can have later. It was only 75p and quite big, so I am pleased with that.
