Valkyrie
Well the moral of this story is do not use a hair dryer with a flighty bird. Pippin had a heart attack before I even got to use it on her! She never liked her bum washed, but usually she was dried with a towel and the rest was up to her, but this time of year I've never been happy letting damp birds go back out in the cold or damp. So down to 2 girls again. Geriatric freeloaders! My little tough cookies! Am I sad about it? A little, but I'm happier because she was always mean to the pekin. It also means a winter curfew will be easier with the 2 old buddies. Unless they snuff it too! Squirt will be 9 next year and Skye will be 10! A lot to be said for these girls. Apart from a bit of sour crop once, Skye has been very healthy. Squirt had breathing issues a few times but I think her meanness to everyone but her flock is keeping her going! Olly
My goodness those are very long-lived birds! I'm sorry to hear about Pippin though.
Valkyrie
Thanks Olly - she was the only one laying! Beautiful chocolate coloured eggs. But she stopped in June and started moulting - the longest moult in history and only stopped last month. I'm guessing she was around 4. I don't know how old she was when we got Merry and Pippin - I assumed they were point of lay, but could have been older. I didn't like the place where we got them and I always felt like we rescued them. Merry died around 3 years with breathing issues, Pip lasted a year longer. I feel that our original girls were from a nice breeder. Eglu's came from a decent place, and so Skye is the last of her first hatched babies. Squirt is from our first hatched babies and so when we had Skye and Co, they pretty much grew up together. Squirt was from eggs that we got from our original breeder. Although Squirt is a feisty mare at times, I do think that she is a flock protector at heart. The newbies were just eat everything that anyone else is eating and would shove everyone else away. It was very difficult for me to see them behave like that, but with the background I understand why. Which makes it sad that I didn't appreciate them as much as the old'uns. But it is what it is. And the circle of life continues. New home = more chooks and hoping by this time next year we will be settled in. Process will start in the new year.
