Tinnutis

Recommended Posts

Has anyone any experience of this? We recently added a second storey extension and since the boiler was moved I have heard an audible hum throughout the house. I have had builders back and plumber to no avail. Initially they could hear noise but now it seems I am the only one. My husband has just turned everything off, plumbing, electric and I can still hear it,so presumably it is in my head. I am the sort of person who can’t sleep in hotel rooms with the fridge on so as you can imagine this is driving me insane. I cannot get to sleep and when I do I wake for few hours and then get another two or three, which is ok as boys are off school but once they are back I will need to be up.Do you think the original noise which definately was there has imprinted and will go away? I have goggled tinnutis and it doesn’t sound promising, does anyone here have any personal experience and any help? I would be very grateful.

I was diagnosed 20 odd years ago it don't get better but you have to try and live with it. stress does aggravate it as does thinking about it the volume in my ears has gone up in the time it's taking me to type this. the boiler noise might not be the primary cause/sound that triggered it off but could be the straw that broke the camel's back so to speck with me the main cause was electric angle grinders back in the 80's and then using power tools in general both electric and petrol engine powered gear just made it worse to the point I had to go to the GP. I've used Airside grade ear defenders ever since when using any power tools. but it got worse about 12 months back when I had to get a new mobile phone the ring tone I now use (about the only one my brain reckonices as the phone) has triggered a new set of tones in My head/hearing part of the ring tone been one of them. i should say I had a hearing test just over 18 months back which to my surprise came back as 'acceptable hearing quality' I know I missed a fair few sounds in the test because the pause between some of them was to long.

there is a Tinnitus society that do have advisers/ councilors that the GP can refer you to but You'll have to go to audiology first but to be honest I found them not help.the main tip they gave my was to have a just out of tune radio on at night to generate 'static noise' for me it had to be that loud to drown out the hiss/ringing in my ears that it kept me awake more than the tinnitus did/does

I have tinnitus as well, as does my dad. He has a beep, I have a crackle. It definitely is stress related, as I only have my crackle when stressed. (Noticing it doesn't help with the stress at all! It often makes me more stressed!)

Went to the hospital for a hearing test, as it often is the case that the sound you hear is also the frequency you physically can't hear anymore. For me there was no indication of this though. My Ear/Nose/Throat doc offered psychological help, but for now I declined. If it would be constant, I really would need it, as I can hardly hear anything else when I have the crackle.

I have taken my tinnitus as a very good indicator I need to take a serious step back and be selfish for a while. But if it is preventing you from getting decent sleep and functioning normally, you should really seek psychological help. Sounds odd but it can help.

My dad has a cd with common tinnitus sounds. It was rather interesting to scroll through the different sounds and pick out the one I have. Have played it to some people to let them hear what I hear.

Thank you both. I have hearing problems since childhood and long term perforation of my right ear with poor hearing on that side. It seems almost unnoticeable during day as this is a busy house but night time is very hard to manage. I may have to see gp re sleeping tablets. Although on a website I was on it mentioned numerous meds that caused tinnutis.

Just be mindful of your hearing now. I use earplugs when there is too much noise. The more damage to your hearing, the worse tinnitus can get.

I'll second that just make sure that they are of a high enough rating to block higher pitched sound like I say above I wear ear defenders when I use any type of powered kit even the vacuum, but on a bad Tinnitus day they do amplify the noise.

I'm lucky I can live with the humming ,bells and whistles as long as I don't think about, talk or now write about it then it's not to bad. but for a lot of people it's a living nightmare that has no cure or way to manage it

I have loads of noises in my ears :(

Chugging, whistles, humming are just some.

I often ask hubby if he can hear certain noises and he never can, nor can anyone else.

During the day they are bearable but bedtime I manage because I am normally really tired and I try really hard to block them out.

I did notice during the brief hot spell in the summer, when we had our fan on, that the noise of the fan cancelled out the noise in my head.

I did read that Zinc can help, I did try but didn't notice anything different.
