CannyCat
We get a lot of flies in our small garden in the summer, and we're concerned they're bothering the neighbours who all have small children. We've tried paper, but the flies just aren't interested. Can anyone recommend an Arnold Schwarzenegger strength fly solution?! xx
lisa33
Hi I put citronella oil on the roosting bars and shade. That helps keep them away.

jsbates65
I was having lots of flies due to the chickens food. The girls free range and so their poo etc isn't concentrated into one area and was not the cause of flies. . .but as soon as I put food out, whether dry pellets or corn or whatever they would descend. I have tried the holistic approach of peppermint oil and citronella. . .and that seemed to work for awhile. But I finally got the idea from this list to go get something a bit more lethal. I am a vegetarian and typically try not to harm other beings, but I must admit that flies are from Satan especially when they gather in large amounts. Anyway. . .I got these cheap fly traps that have some odd smelling liquid (don't want to really know what it is). . .you squirt it into the bottle, fill it half way with water and set it out. It has a lid that allows the flies to go in (who are attracted to the nasty smell) but they can't get out. Within a couple of days, the amount of flies caught was crazy. It has really helped. The amount of flies has greatly decreased on my patio!

arowland17
We have a flitrap too as had so many blue bottles and they all come from next door's overgrown garden but were attracted over by our chicken's poop. It sounds exactly like the previous post described, it's a pot with a lid and little holes at the top that you hang in the garden, and you put this powder in with water and the flies are attracted to it. I would not recommend putting it near where you would sit eg a patio, ours is about 5metres away and that is plenty and although it didn't seem to be working for the 1st week or so, it's heaving now and we have no flies at all around the chickens or anywhere else in the garden really. I had accepted we would always have them due to next door's mess of a garden but now they are all around this flitrap and no where else in the garden so that's fine by us! It's really worked well
