Suziwoo
Last night, we were just getting into bed (11.00ish) when we heard a strange noise outside by the Eglu. We immediately assumed it was a fox and opened the window wide where we could just about make out something frantically scrabbling against the hatch side of the eglu. OH rushed down and grabbed a torch and we then realised it was an enormous badger. We have known there is a badger that comes through, because of the hole either side of the garden, but have only seen it once in about 5 years. It was going crazy trying to get into the eglu, but charged down the garden once the torch light caught it. Does anyone know whether it would have attacked my girls if it had managed to get in (Good old Eglu - safe as houses!!!)
Geoid
Good thing that your girls are ok Good old Eglu - safe as houses!!! I would say safer than houses, as houses are always getting broken into, burgled etc etc
bangers
Badgers eat mostly earthworms, but they will eat small rodents, frogs and slugs, nuts, sweetcorn wheat and grubs and carrion, so I would be doubtful if they would go for a hen, maybe there was some spilt food or a big tasty slug under the eglu. bangers
Oops just googled and found, What do they eat? A badger will eat almost anything, from small mammals such as rabbits, moles, rats and hedgehogs......... so keep the Hens locked up
Dancing Gal
Yes they will have your chooks if they can - and if they are big enough they will turn on you if you aren't careful. Take care.
lisa33
The man who came to pick up my chimney last month said he has always had problems with badgers and never with foxes. I was quite surprised as it was the first time I'd ever heard of it.
Jules.
I was told once that badgers always go the same route that badgers from years past had walked, & they don't like change at all. Is your eglu in the way of the badger highway? That may be what the badger was upset about.
Suziwoo
Thanks for your replies. Certainly glad the badger didn't manage to get in by the sounds of things. Jules, I don't think it is in the path as I know where the hole is and they are pretty opposite each other in the garden. No sign last night though - thankfully!
