Tessa the Duchess
As a brand new chicken keeper I am gradually trying to assemble the various things I need to keep my pets in tip top shape. I spent all day trying various pet shops to buy some red mite powder, absolutely no luck at all. I live in North London. can anybody help with a shop where I might be lucky, or an online shop maybe? Also garlic powder, I tried supermarkets the health food shop to no avail, help here also? I used to read a lot maybe do a spot of housework occassionaly, since I have my chickens I seem to spend all my time on fox watch while they are free ranging or scanning this forum for tips and ideas.....I'm not complaining.its more fun than hoovering! Richard
I have kept chickens for the last three and a half years and I have never had any red mite powder. I would buy some if I needed it, but I don't think you need to get it in advance - you may not need it! If I was going to get it, I would order on line from someone like Quill or Ascot or Domestic Fowl Trust. I buy stuff as and when I need it - ordering on line will get to you in a day or two so it seems an unecessary expence to build up a stock of things you might not need. I reckon the best things you can have are a good brush and scourer to clean the roosting bars and wash down the coop - then you might never get the red mite thingies! xChicken04x
How about the omlet shop (sorry cant think of anywhere else) http://www.omlet.co.uk/shop/shop.php?cat=Chicken%20Extras&sub=health They have everything you need! xx
Tessa the Duchess
Thanks Richard. I was under the impression that people used the powder as a preventative measure. I scrub the bars and inside area every 3 days or so, so I will take your advice and not waste money. And I should have thought of the online Omlet shop durrrrr. Tessa. Snowy
I think a few of us use the red mite powder as a preventative, but also just because it makes the eglu smell pretty Contains lavender oil.

Cool - I'll borrow yours then when I need it ('cos having stuck my neck out and said I haven't had to get some, sure as eggs are eggs I'll need some soon! Olly
as far as I know, mine have never had it .. but every time I clean the Eglu I dust the ends of the bars in Diatom. Prevention is better than cure! The Omlet shop is an obvious one, but you could also try G W Titmuss http://www.gjwtitmussshop.co.uk/acatalog/# - I've used them and found them very efficient and they deliver quickly. I don't know where in North London you are, or if you have transport, but I find it's worth the drive up to their shop, to save delivery costs, if I need a lot of stuff. Tessa the Duchess
Thanks Olly for the info. It is a bit far for me to drive, but their catalogue is great. Tessa
CHARLIE
i wouldn't worry about buying garlic powder either yet- ours will eat chopped garlic mixed in with their layer's pellets or in a salad, also i've heard that you can just put a peeled clove in their water which works too, if they're not too keen on eating it.
