Sheilaz
It does lose its appeal doesn't it? Just doesn't seem like a chore at all on a warm sunny day. Now its a quick empty of droppings tray, very quick check/wipe of some of the bars and off again! Love feeding the chooks & collecting the eggs still but, all that mud, poo, water and scrubbing brush? No thanks. My name is Sheila & I'm hibernating. freerange
Oh "Ooops, word censored!", I knew there was something I 'd forgotten. In my defence though I do have a pretty good excuse - I've been editing photos to go with DH's column. (Updated my avatar too)

Cate in NZ
Daughter has cleaned 2 eglus for 2 weeks in succession. Do you think I'm exploiting her desire to prove to me just how good she is at caring for her pets? She's also cleaned out her rabbit x2 weekly for the past 2 weeks. I'm enjoying the respite from pet cleaning duties, and she's working to convince us that she'd look after a kitten. Have to admit the eglus are gleaming- looking like new. She does a very thorough job
ali-s
i dont like cleaning the eglu in the cold weather. Can I join the CA club? Mine hasn't had a proper clean for 4 weeks. Just a quick wipe round the nesting box with pet disinfectant once a week and emptying the droppings tray twice a week. Saturday I found a way of removing all the roosting bars via the egg port door without taking the Eglu apart. They had a soak in a bucket of hot soapy water and a scrub. (first time in 4 months ). Dried on the radiator in the kitchen.

motherhen
This will reassure all you guys who don't like cleaning. I empty the poo tray straight into the compost heap pretty regularly, change the straw in the nesting box when it needs it and take out the bars through the egg port when I do the poo tray to s"Ooops, word censored!"e off poo with a trowel and check the ends of the bars for mites. Apart from that it gets taken apart and washed ONCE A YEAR (on a nice warm sunny day)
The Dogmother
That's what I like to hear! I actually enjoy doing it, it's just finding the time in daylight! Edited December 6, 2005 by Guest

Sheilaz
.....and take out the bars through the egg port when I do the poo tray to s"Ooops, word censored!"e off poo with a trowel and check the ends of the bars for mites. Apart from that it gets taken apart and washed ONCE A YEAR (on a nice warm sunny day) Well, that's easy for you to say, Mrs. Mark2 Pink Eglu! Remember, I can't get the bars out easily with the mark one & really do have to dismantle it to get at the bars properly. I did this every day or 2 in the summer as it was me or the red mite to win. Hopefully this won't be such a problem over winter, so will just check a couple & if all clear, do the minimum clean approach. Good plan though Jane. I do empty the tray most days, check the rest briefly, then leave the scrubbing until I come out of hibernation. P.S. Of course, if I had a mark 2............... Trish
Poop tray once a week, and only that often cos they fill it . Bars when they need it and the rest gets a wash down once a month/ 6 weeks or so but I suspect less in the cold weather. We've been fortunate and had no nasty friends, I guess I'd be keener if we'd had mites etc

Nick&Trish
Hi, Another Trish here - clean mine every week, all taken apart and scrubbed. Last time it rained I took it into the greenhouse bit by bit to clean - sneeky eh? I don't mind doing it too much as the chickens are always intersted and I get to spend some time with them. I also fell VERY virtuous when it is done. When it need to be moved off the bark chipping for a 'rake-over' "Ooops, word censored!"le OH steps in and the cats come out too, so it is a real 'family' occassion!
