Is she getting ready?

Recommended Posts

Hiya - As you know I had some more chickens in August this year. All of which will be 21 / 22 weeks this coming Saturday. COmbs are growing good & Rolo's & Smarties have gone bright red & so have their faces. Smarite has become much more confident & tame now. They have both been in & out of the eglu yesterday & today all day long. But today, I noticed a poo as I was giving them treats - looked like a very pale yellow egg yolky poo. Is this a sign that they are very close to laying? I can't go off the colour of Smartie's legs as they are meant to be yellow with her being a leghorn & Rolos are darkish legs anyway. Rolo loves being stroked now too.

I just got my first egg today! There was a bit splattery watery white "poo" on the patio yesterday - now we've got an egg, I'm assuming that was a failed attempt!

All of my girls (19 and 21 weeks old) have really small combs and wattles - 2 are slightly reddish - and their legs are all different colours so don't know if that's a good indicator or not.

Hope you get one soon!

yes, Rolo & Smartie are both crouching! Bounty the biggest of the lot - the Magpie is I think the most immature of the 3 - her comb isn't growing as quick as the others & her face is not as red - she's quite a baby really & still a bit finger pecking!

I've just been giving them there evening sweetcorn before they go to bed in about an hours time & the little ones have thrown the ping pong ball out of the nest much to their disgust! It's as if they are telling me ' mum we don't need that, we're big girls now & we're going to lay eggs really soon'! :D

The big girls in the cube - Rita, Blanche & Audrey have just had a little bit of Tuna. I felt a bit wierd feeding them that, but they have gobbled it down - especially Audrey. Which is what I wanted, as she is growing back her feathers after her moult and they are a bit spikey looking. She is laying & eating grit, but the shells on her whopper eggs have been a bit thin & sometimes Blanche has gone and sat on them & crushed them in the cubes nest.

Blanche is my only good layer at the moment. I've had them 15 months now and they came to me at POL. So I think they are doing good really. Blanche is the pepperpot and she is a magnificent layer. Rita is having abreak for the winter I think & Audrey well she doesn't quite get her packaging right. Nevermind I still love them all. But if my little ones start soon, I may have an egg supply through Winter like I did last year with my Omlet girls! Just waiting for them all to lay & mature then they are moving in the cube with the big girls - sooner rather than later I hope, as I want my pekins for my birthday!
