Tina C
We are rehoming some bantams at the weekend. There is a mixture of girls and boys and chicks living in a barn - but they 'have to go'. I am not sure what they are though. Some of the girls have little 'pom poms' (guess what one is going to be called) and are buff coloured. I know that polands have these crests - does anyone have a pic of a poland bantam so I can work out if this is what they might be. Or any other crested girlie might help. (This question is for Bronze too as she is very tempted!) Thanks
The Dogmother
This is Dolly, she's a poland/araucana cross http://club.omlet.co.uk/gallery/main.php?g2_itemId=6772 Edited October 10, 2007 by Guest
Tina C
OOOh just found a picture of Ali S' poland bantie and these girls are not like that - they have little round pom poms. Is that because they are young or something else entirely?
Martin B
Young Silkies have a little pom pom kind of hair do.
Tina C
Thanks Clare - that is a bit like it but I am sure these girls have neater 'balls' on their heads. Anyone ideas anyone? I really should have taken a pic when we went last Saturday - I know. I'm stupid but we were all too excited to think about that!
The Dogmother
Young polands start with a sort of crest rather than a pom pom, may be another breed...
Tina C
Right will go and find a silkie pic (am supposed to be working) - but silkies have silky feathers don't they - these were normal feathers.
The Dogmother
I don't think they are silkies - you'd have noticed that they have fluff rather than regular feathers
Martin B
When they are young they do have the pom pom thing though.
The Dogmother
They do Martin, but they also look like fluffy stuffed toys - I think Tina might have noticed that. There's a breed of ducks, which has pom poms, but I can't remember the name. Can't say I've heard of hens with little balls on their heads. Martin B
Tina, if you look in the breeds section of the omlet website (top of page) there are a few with pom poms in there. Have a look at the Houdan and the Appenzeller Spitzhauben in particular.
Tina C
Thanks Martin Maybe these pom poms are more feathery than I remember them - I will ask Layla and Mike to have a look at Dolly when they get home and see what they think (Layla will be the best bet she has a much better memory than Mike, although he has seen them more often as he goes there on business) By the way Clare Dolly is gorgeous- I want one like that now! Tina C
Ooooh the owner said he used to have ducks too until the fox got them - hope these aren't a cross breed No, definitely chickens....
Cinnamon
Don't Auracanas have tufty tops too? There are some Poland piccys in my album also
Tina C
Ooh ooh Sarah - what is Crumble? I think there are some like her there (but still not solved the pom pom head mystery) When I get these bantams and I post pics you are all going to think I am crazy if they don't look like pom poms after all.... Goodness knows what Bronze will think when she comes online. Thing is, because these girls are living in a barn with varius cockerels they could be any mixture of things. Cinnamon
Crumble is a Barbu D'Anver in Quail colouring which is a lot of name for a small chicken. She is really gorgeous & has a dear little feathery beard. In fact those piccys are of the late Crumble who died a day after we got her.She has now been replaced by a slightly older model, who is even prettier
