I can't believe i'm posting this

I have a beautiful sling I used for mine (forgot about that!) it is a Pareija (or something like that) in gorgeous reds, purples and apricots. It was great for doing a shop, they fell asleep in the sling while I pushed the shopping trolley. Much less hassle than a pushchair. Now it's a throw on my armchair!

I think in reality the baby is safer in a sling than in your arms. If you fell when carrying a baby down the stairs you would at best one hand to break your fall and one to hold the baby. With a sling you'd have 2 hands to break the fall. I've never even tripped holding my LO. I think he'd just have to wear a LO once and he'd be hooked

Try www.slingmeet.co.uk to see if there's a group near you so you can try one out with Seth. They might even know of a sling library where you could borrow one to see what you think.

Its taken a while for me to catch up on this thread.

Our pram is still in the garage, though nowadays it is used for pumpkins both where baby went and in the shopping tray, if the pumpkin is small enough. We used single pushchairs on holiday partly because I didn't have a double one and also because some pavements were so narrow that the McClaren buggy and McClaren pushchair only just fitted on. Neither was designed for rough ground and buses were too difficult to use a pushchair then - non of the dropping ones like we have now for pushchairs and wheelchairs. There is no way I could have carried a baby or older child for any length of time if I hadn't had a sling. Ours were secondhand and washable.

Those that have been recommended in the last couple of postings appear to be even better than what I had and they were good. One bit of advice I heard about choosing slings was to make sure that the baby's weight is supported on the top of the leg, from knees up, not just the nappy area.

I didn't get on with the back-carrier we were given as it was not only heavy on my dodgy back, but part of the frame dug into me just behind my hips. However, I borrowed one at Corfe Castle which was made and I think donated by Tomy. That had a strap that goes around the waist, which meant that that was where the weight was carred and it was comfortable.

As for safety in a sling, if you are shopping, maybe you can be pushed around, but people can also fall over a pushchair or drop things on the little one. Sometimes they are more vulnerable when lower down as people can't see them so easily. One of my friends had her child used as an ash-tray!:x
