dinkybluebug
Hi, We've had our chooks at home for 9 weeks since they were collected from Omlet... as of yet we've had no eggs I'm assuming that they would have been around 14 weeks old when we got them and so are now around 23 weeks old. Their combs have grown and are red and over the past two weeks, Rose (the Gingernur Ranger) does seem to be squatting a lot - but nothing else. Does this seem like a normal amount of time for them to get to this point? I'm not sure if it's worth noting that sometimes when one of them poo's (not sure who) that it looks as if I've spilt a bit of milk on the patio, rather than chicken poo! If anyone else has had similar experiences then please let me know..... I want some eggs!! Thanks, Alan
Egluntyne
Squatting is a good sign. Eggs should be imminent from her at least. Now that the days are getting shorter, it will have an impact on how soon they lay. In my experience around 26 weeks is the norm.
Olly
It could be quite soon ... it is soooo frustrating waiting for that first egg! If they are squatting, that's a good sign. They will surprise you any day now. Don't forget to have the camera ready to take a picture of that first egg!
Omletina Kyckling
Hi - my first Omlet girl laid after about 3 weeks, and she'd been squatting for about a week before. My other two girls show no signs of squatting or laying - Nina's comb is quite red now but Jenny's is still pale pink so I think they'll be a few weeks yet. It is so so frustrating waiting, but once the first one comes, it'll be worth the wait. Helga laid her 8th egg in 9 days and it was 72g (after having yesterday off) Wow!! moochoo
Hi we got our 2 gingernuts on the day before you (they might be sisters! ) Ours aren't laying yet but Gertie is very close, very red comb and wattles and crouching. However Gladys is no where near, still very pale in the face with a tiny comb. It won't be long before yours are laying especially if they're crouching. I wonder if Gertie will lay on the same day as yours???
chocolatedog
Pepper was squatting when I first got her; Ginger started squatting about 5 days before her first egg, and Spice........well, we're still waiting, but she is definitely a good few weeks younger. Can't wait for her to start squatting - I've never yet been able to catch her! Flighty little madam!!! I have to do any health checks from peering at her a few feet away! KateP
We got our girls from Omlet nearly 8 weeks ago and the man who delivered them said that they were about 18 weeks old. Neither of them has started squatting yet but their combs have grown quite a bit and are pretty red now. Their faces are also very red. Can't wait for our first egg! Madchook
My girls are only 18 weeks/maybe just coming up to 19 (I raised them from chicks so know they are no older) and we had the first egg today! They are the same hybrid as a g'nut ranger. They started going red 3 weeks ago ( the larger of the two a couple of days earlier) but only been squatting for 3 days. I think the larger hen must have laid, so hoping for 2 tomorrow I wasn't ready for them to start yet and they are still on growers Have a sack of layers coming with cube on 29th...think I'm gonna have to buy another Anyway, sounds like it'll be soon for your girlies! pgainey
MY 2 GNR's from Omlet must be quite different in age. Cash's comb etc grew and went red within a week but Tango's is still very small and pale. Cash has now laid 4 times in 6 days (nothing this morning but I left early) she "squats" when you approach her. Good luck and just keep waiting. Its worth it!
