Lovemychooks
My favourite chicken, Colonel, died on Sunday night She hadn't been well for a few days, all she was doing was drinking all the time (i'd never seen a chicken drink so much) and not eating, even when I gave her mealworms she ate a couple and no more. This wasn't like her, she was always the one that would take my arm off for mealworms, and I went to let them out yesterday and she had died. Even as I write this tears are streaming down my face (i'm at work and thank god no-one has come in), I had planned to take her to the vet yesterday afternoon but she died yesterday morning. I feel so guilty that I didn't do anything sooner She was one of my original ex-batts and did live, free range, for 6 months so i'm glad of that but sad that she's gone
Tina C
So sorry to hear your news. Its only natural to be sad so have a good cry. But remember you gave her a good home and a great final six months, so remember the good times and smile too.

The Dogmother
Don't worry about having a good cry - we all do it. She knew 6 months as a free and happy hen - she'll be a chicken angel now.
Lovemychooks
Thanks for all your kind words, it's really good to know that there are so many good people around.
Olly
That's very sad, but don't feel guilty. If you couldn't see anything obviously wrong with her apart from lack of appetite it's unlikely the vet would have been able to do anything, and at least she was spared the trauma of a trip there and maybe being dosed with stuff - she died peacefully. She had six very happy months, and was obviously much loved. PS: If anyone comes in, just say you were rubbing your eye and you must have had some perfume/handcream/soap/whatever on your hand because it's really made your eyes water, gosh I look as if I've been crying, don't I! superjules
Oh dear, I'm so sorry. I've only had mine a month but already I'd be devastated if anything happened to one of them. As the others have said, you can take comfort from the fact she had a lovely last 6 months with you in a wonderful loving environment.
